I’m Jessica Prusa, originally from Cleveland, Ohio now living and working in Barcelona. I mostly draw and paint abstract human-like monsters, animal-like monsters and plain old monsters. ‘Monsters’ might be too harsh a word here depending on your definition…I guess they could also be called ‘creatures’.
I occasionally draw real-ish looking people/animals too.
Why do I draw the things I draw?
I left the states in 2005 and have been abroad ever since. I’ve lived in Australia, Korea, Spain and have bounced around many places in between. While humans inhabit every country (I’ve been to) and share common physical attributes, (ie: eyes, ears, nose and mouth), I’m fascinated by how different outside information can be processed using what appears to be the exact same equipment. The same goes for environment – everyone’s interpretations are totally up in the air.
In that sense, I think individually, everyone is unique enough to be their own ‘monster’ – have you ever met anyone who seemed to function without ears? Or had oversized eyes? Or prickly skin?
Monsters aside, I basically let my pen do whatever it wants until it starts shaping out a figure, then I take over.
