I draw the greatest inspiration from the people around me. For the month of May, I'm going to ask one of my buddies to send me a drawing/doodle to highlight for each post.

My first buddy is my best buddy: Jessica Clark is my partner, roommate and collaborator and all-time favorite person in the world. She sent me the above doodle to include.

Jessica is a designer and artist, too.

We live in a house in South Austin where we make all sorts of things and collaborate with other artists on zines and art shows under the moniker Crummy House. We're taking a break from the collaborations to focus on our own work for a bit, but we'll be back in action later this year.

Few days ago I was in Ghent and among many nice people and new friends, I met Martha Verschaffel. Martha has strange dreams that she turns into short stories for her DIY zines. She gave me two of her zines and the day after I went to Paris. I don't know if it's because of this city or because of her stories, but now for two days in a row I have strange nightmares.

I had the pleasure of meeting up with Mr. Fender this weekend, Vaughn Fender that is. He met me at the coffee shop across the street from my apartment (I am so lazy but shhh...don't tell him that). We spent the rest of the afternoon talking and sharing stories. He was sporting a back pack filled with goodies, including this book (it's actually a very thick magazine). He told me it is one of the books he always grabs when he needs to get inspired. And after flipping through the pages, I agreed. So although this book is a bit of an oldie, we both urge you to get it in your hands if you don't already have it. It's page after page of drawings and scribbles and all things doodle-icious.

I bought a large set of markers and I feel like a kid again because all I want to do is color things in. Seriously. I can't stop.

So in the spirit of our addiction to draw on anything and everything, here is some new work and words that I haven't been able to get out of my head until they've been put down on paper.

There's something quite special about zines, don’t you think?! These little booklets are usually hand made, low tech and mostly produced in small runs by the artists themselves. As a zinester myself, I really appreciate the close insight a zine can give in terms of an artist's perspective and ways of thinking/working. I view them mostly as a labour of love.

Last Saturday I had a fabulous time at the London Zine Symposium, (see my brief review and lots of pictures here) and whilst there I managed to snap up a few great zines for my ever growing collection. Yes, they're an addictive thing to collect as they come in all sizes, styles, subjects, mediums, formats, monochrome, colour, etc.

So I thought I'd share some images of my zine library and compile for you DA readers exclusively a little list of my current top 7 favorites – why seven? Well, because it's my favorite number!
