Tumblr of the Week: Hello Stranger

A good friend is someone who doesn't judge you, who always listens to you without making it about themselves, who you can simply sit in comfortable silence with… Perhaps these girls are onto something.

The tumblr we stumbled upon this week belongs to Korean artist Dan-ah Kim. Out of her expansive portfolio, one recurring subject that stood out to us were ladies in their undies with house plants. Because we only see the girls from behind, I get the slightly voyeuristic feeling that I have accidentally walked in on a private moment.

Tumblr of the Week: Gwion Christmas

Gwion Christmas’s drawings are replete with images of feverish expression. Communication, or rather frustrated communication, is everywhere. Language seems confused or interrupted as if there is something important to convey, that’s unheard. There are lines from mouths that circle and intersect but never make it from speaker to audience, there is a conversation in shapes, and there are detached speech bubbles littered throughout. As a lover of expression and a lover of words, I love Gwion. You will too.

Tumblr of the Week:
Ahmet Özcan Illustrations

I came across the drawings of Ahmet Özcan after he mailed in one of our Doodle Addict postcards and then again when he submitted an illustration for our latest coloring book. My favorite posts are the photos of his awesome white-on-black doodles over his sketchbook. The characters in his drawings are creature feature material, often looking as if they are emerging out of the whiteness to come after you. There's something so interesting about the way he leaves out the body of the monster, leaving much of it up to your imagination to color in. Equal parts playful and creepy, fans of monsters will love his doodles! See more of his images »

Tumblr of the Week: Amy

We came across this week's tumblr while reading some fanmail we received from Aimee Kinsey, a 17 year old art student in England. What attracts me to Aimee's art is the grungy, collage-y elements, reminiscent of found art. My favorite part about her style is that she isn't restricted by having to stay within the paper she's using, sometimes cutting holes in it to show odds and ends lying underneath. It's fun to see artists unafraid to add dimensions to their paper and create layers with their sketches! Follow her along at aimeedanielle.tumblr.com and encourage her to keep doing what she's doing.

Tumblr of the Week: Scribblings

Is there a name for that feeling of wishing you could jump into an art piece? I'm feeling it right now as I scroll through maruti-bitamin's Tumblr. I'd love to step into the shoes of the serene kids she draws and explore her watercolor world, touch and smell the strange flowers growing out of me, and play with the fantastical critters all around the dream-like environment.

Tumblr of the Week: Dany Reede

I'm not 100% sure what's going on… but I definitely like it. I doubt that trying to make sense of the chaos is what I'm supposed to be doing, so I'm just going to go with the flow and enjoy the frenzy of symbols and text and colors in the drawings on Dany Reede's tumblr.

Tumblr of the Week: Mangun

It's interesting how we can immediately identify a person's face in drawings, even when, upon closer inspection, they barely contain any characteristics of real humans. Indonesian artist Popo Mangun's black and white drawings are an example of this mental habit. His tumblr is a gallery of strange portraits, whose geometric shapes are reminiscent of ancient tribal masks.
