Big Things Come in Small Drawings

Some ideas are just too big for humans to truly understand the scope of. Evan Lorenzen's tiny art books put them into a straightforward, bite-sized perspective, all within something the size of a thumb tack! It's light reading with heavy subject matter. The choice of ridiculously small (each project seems to get smaller) canvases to convey huge themes is ironic and entertaining. Perhaps this shows how small human accomplishments are in the grand scope of life. Or maybe complicated concepts are best understood when shown in their simplest form. Whatever the case is, I love the balance of playful and serious within these hand-sewn manuscripts.

Matchbook Paintings

These images will make you look twice, and maybe two more times after that. Joseph Martinez paints inside matchbooks with such precision and patience you wont believe it until you watch the video for yourself. The art is often times smaller than the size of a dime.

I can't imagine anything more fascinating than seeing these matchbook paintings in person. Fortunately, those of you in San Francisco will have the opportunity at his upcoming show, A Little Piece of the Bay.

Scroll down, and you'll be asking yourself again and again how he's achieving such depth, shadows and detail.

A Tiny Red Book of Love

You may know Chris Battle for his illustration work on rambunctious TV shows like The Powerpuff Girls, Dexter's Laboratory and Samurai Jack, among others. It's easy to see why; his cartoon talent is a natural fit, but what you may not know is Chris' more sensitive side.

On a past Valentines, Chris bought his wife a little bound red sketchbook, and every day he filled its miniature pages with random characters and thoughts. The result is a witty and adorable itsy-bitsy book of love and doodles, be prepared to be swooned.

Tiny Notions

There's something to be said about the sentiment behind a quickly drawn note, which is the exact concept behind Tiny Notions. Lisa Przybylski does (almost) daily post-it drawings for no reason at all. If I found any of her drawings lying around my desk at work, it'd pretty much make my day.
