Hi, How Are You

Today I want to introduce (to those who may not be acquainted) the art and music of Daniel Johnston. I was first introduced to his music and then subsequently his artwork when I was a teenager through the soundtrack to the movie KIDS. I immediately fell in love with his music and art. Later I moved to Austin, Texas a place where Daniel used to live. In the center of the city there is a big mural of one of his characters that is now iconic. A frog looking creature with snail like eyes that states Hi, How Are You. It now adorns t-shirts for the city of Austin and is almost like a mascot for the city. So you can kind of say he is a home town hero of mine.

A manic depressive and schizophrenic both his music and art are filled with emotion and with his work you get a direct look into his mind. His art is so pure and child like. Resonating with me in a way few artists have. One of my biggest influences and inspirations, his obvious passion and drive for his work are something that really struck a chord with me. I admire anyone with such drive. Despite any obstacles he has, he has been unrelenting in his pursuit and love of art. I hope you enjoy his music and artwork as much as I do and can draw inspiration from him. I highly advise checking out the documentary about his life The Devil and Daniel Johnston. Read on

Good Dude Aldo Ramos

Aldo Ramos is a good friend I met early in my years moving to Austin. He and I met through the internet, both looking for people to make art with and hang out around town. We ended up being good friends going to music and art shows, doing some street art along the way. Here's an old collaboration (above) from those days.

Aldo's style is a strange mix of super-doodly work with some collage mixed in between. He keeps a super loose style and colorful palette, both of things that I enjoy in artwork. His doodles remind me of the sketching that happens in the margins of your notebook in school, where many an artist find their style in between learning biology and the other courses taught in school. Super Sweet Jay Geurink

Jay Geurink, a good homie down here in Austin is also a rad maker of sorts. He works with found objects and wooden pieces to form colorful, often animal related works. His detail with a paintbrush is pretty killer and his type work is top notch in my books.

Jay also collaborated with Jessica and myself on a Crummy House zine in the past and has contributed to many art projects in the past. He also kitty sits our cats when we go out of town, so he's A-plus in our books.

Real Deal Abi Daniel

Abi Daniel is an illustrator and designer making super rad illustrations for all sorts of causes. Her attention to detail is pretty amazing and style that reminisces back to text-book illustration styles.

Abi applies her talents at a local screenprint shop, Bearded Lady, where she preps separations for screens and designs posters to be printed. Her illustrations work great for all sorts of causes from rock shows to hand made boots.

I've been stoked to work with Abi on a few projects including a zine for Crummy House. She's super fun to hang out with and has a great attitude towards work and life.

Drawing Dude Rich Cali

I met Rich Cali at a local watering hole where he serves up tasty drinks to patrons many days of the week here in Austin. When he's not working at Yellow Jacket here in town, he's doodling and drawing to the beat of his own drum.

I love Rich's work and feel that we share a certain affection for the unknown. Rich is a painter and photographer, so seeing his work transition to a refined work on a panel shows his doodles are the foundation for something much greater.

Rich is a founding member of Common House, an art space and studio where he and other members host artists and art shows every month. Go check out their site and drop by an opening if you are in town.

May's Guest Contributor: Mason McFee

It was just a few weeks ago that I featured Mason's work (with a member spotlight), and now I get to mention him again, as he'll be writing for the DA blog right alongside me for the month of May.

He goes by the name of Maseman and hails from the city of Austin. If you play close attention, I think you'll find his love for Texas all over his work and plenty hints of his designer talents as well. From screen prints and murals to scribbles and sketchbooks, Mason has got it covered.

Welcome to the show! Now let's rock May.
