Drawn Tattoos

The lovely and incredibly talented Wendy MacNaughton has been illustrating tattoos (and the stories behind them) for the tumblr blog; Pen & Ink, and now (deservedly so) she is turning it into a book.

Wendy and her Pen & Ink collaborator Isaac Fitzgerald are in the final stretch of putting it all together, but not before reaching out to me with a last-minute call for submissions. Do you have a tattoo with a compelling story behind it? If so, they want it, and they want it now. Take a pic of your tattoo, write a few words with its story and send it to: penandinkproject {at} gmail {dot } com

Art is Forever

Having worked in a tattoo shop before answering phones, cleaning tubes, making appointments, etc.. I was and still am fascinated by the sheer output each artist does in a single day. Lots of drawing, perfecting on the spot, redrawing, inking the idea on paper and then finally (once the design is approved) actually tattooing the finished product permanently onto the customer's skin. It's a process that people who don't have tattoos are in the dark about for the most part.

I met Jason Sturgill via Instagram awhile ago and we have done several projects of personal interest together. I love his ideas and how he brings artists together in really amazing circumstances. I instantly fell in love with his project "Art is Forever." I feel a connection with the idea of bringing tattoo artists, doodlers, and museums together to blur the line of art. Below is text directly from his site as well as a video that explains way better than me just what this project means and how he was actually able to pull tattooers, artists, and the Portland Art Museum together to make this one of the most memorable projects I have seen in recent memory.

Tattoo Parlour

I just got an email of Cristina Guitan's latest projects and I couldn't resist posting this one. Tattoo Parlour was part of a Friday Late event at the V&A Museum, where she was asked to draw impermanent tattoos on visitor's bodies alongside illustration buddies Elvia Vasconcelos, Gerda Razmaite and Nick Alston.

How ridiculously fun must that have been. Cheers to one day getting all DA members into a room with nothing but markers and pens and of course a required dress code of sleeveless shirts.

Related: An old post from July 2009 titled Body Doodle, and if you need a reminder, a link to Cristina's previous mention on DA: The Structure of the Universe.

Temporary Tattoo Doodles

I first discovered Thomas's work back in 2000, when he and some friends launched the very inspiring online design magazine Surfstation. I remember visiting the site daily, in fact, I still have a t-shirt of theirs. Thomas has since moved on but I get a glimpse of his work every now and again on flickr. The above photos are taken from his Tattooday set: where he documents the temporary drawings he doodles on his arm of phrases or lyrics that inspire him. Enjoy the view.

Tattoo Tears

I got her CD (in trade) back in 1995 while working at the CD Exchange. It was probably the best job ever. I doodled and listened to music all day. The customers of the shop were always local music fanatics who came in just to chit chat and bullshit. It's been forever, but Nan is back on my playlist today. This begs the question, what are you listening to right now? and can I get the answer in a doodle (send to iamokat {at} gmail {dot} com)?
