That's Gross, I Love It

Gore, girls, and robots everywhere--I think I'm in love. I tripped over the art of Lauren YS today when I read about her upcoming exhibition, "Behind You." I was instantly hooked in by the in-your-face girliness dripping with attitude. Her portfolio is gushing with colors that remind me of rainbow swirl ice cream, deceptively sweet at first glance until you start noticing all the nasty little details.

*Make sure to to watch her video after the fold, where she flips through 4 complete years of sketchbook drawings from her Moleskine.

Tumblr of the Week: Lucha!

I'm glad I stumbled over Luciana Ojea’s blog lurking within our tumblr followers. She's an Argentinian illustrator whose sketchbook is filled with countless quirky characters coming alive on every page. Occasionally, they even wander off the paper and onto random objects. Maybe it's from all the screaming and smiling and arms waving in the air, but I love the sense of excitement I get from her crazy little people.

Illustration Around the World

I would love to walk a mile in Pablo ientile’s shoes-- which are probably quite worn by now considering he recently spent six months journeying through thirty cities in ten Asian countries. Pablo, who likes drawing as pablo bear when on the road, is traveling the world meeting and collaborating with artists on his brilliant comic book project. Each artist, uber-talented in their own right, will illustrate the parts of the comic that occur in their cities resulting in a first-person narrative with a crazy cool mashup of styles. Can’t wait to see the end result! Follow Pablo's journey online at illustrationaroundtheworld.com or mobile via his Instagram.

Member Spotlight: Juan Pez

I'm really digging the workspace pics form Juan Pez's desk. His table-top is messy and covered with ink, brushes, scraps, markers, tape, rulers…barely enough room for the drawing itself. And I love that his work is just the same, a mishmash of sloppy characters and comic-like illustrations.

POV: The Sketchbook as a Center Point

Through his beautifully-executed point of view sketches, Thomas Cian takes us on the road with him. We step into his skin, with the sketchbook resting on our lap and pencil in hand, and visit a classroom, a café, or a car with intimacy and familiarity. We have entered his personal space and it is welcoming and warm. And somehow the sketchbook – as center point – seems to create the scene instead of merely recording it.

Tumblr of the Week: Gwion Christmas

Gwion Christmas’s drawings are replete with images of feverish expression. Communication, or rather frustrated communication, is everywhere. Language seems confused or interrupted as if there is something important to convey, that’s unheard. There are lines from mouths that circle and intersect but never make it from speaker to audience, there is a conversation in shapes, and there are detached speech bubbles littered throughout. As a lover of expression and a lover of words, I love Gwion. You will too.
