Open Call / A Robot Coloring Book

Over the next few months we plan on printing our second mini-coloring book. Our first -- The Quintessential, Quirky, Compendium of Cats -- featured 28 global artists in a mashup of styles honoring our feline friends.

This time around we are looking to expand our mini-book to feature over 35 artists and the theme will be robots! In celebration of everything bot - from clanky vintage metal and rusted bolts to B movie retro-futuristic robots - every page, with a drawing from a different artist, will make you want to robot dance.

Our only requirement is that the illustration fall within the robot theme- be it a unique homage to a beloved robotic icon, an uber-shiny mod design, or maybe an entire family of dark, overlord, microwave robots. It's your call, it's your page. The working title of the book is, "Blinking Lights & Beeping Parts: A Robot Coloring Book Collection by Doodlers Anonymous."

The deadline for submissions is April 2nd. Get submission details and upload instructions here Ľ

Scandroids

Artem Solop is a Ukrainian artist who constantly daydreams of robots. Or could be a robot, who knows. His sketchbook is packed with page after page of machine madness and I still want more. Gimme ALL the robots. Solop calls it robot pop, a catchy fit for his mech monsters with occasional bursts of neon green and hot pink. Stay plugged in to his work by following him on Behance or his blog.

Tumblr of the Week: A Droid a Day

Rob Turpin's A Droid a Day project is all about proving that you just can't get tired of robots. Since August 2013, he has been posting droid doodles every. single. day. Most robots are captioned with a name or title that is descriptive of their function, which adds a touch of personality.

I stalked his blog a little bit and found that he started doodling with pen and pencil more often to stop himself from putting more thought into drawing something that looks nice rather than capturing a great idea. "Throwing in a really broad shape with the markers makes you forget about trying to create something beautiful, itís about creating a cool shape, or an interesting form." Wise advice for doodlers!

Be sure to follow his blog for tons of valuable insight. I especially like it when he shares his illustration process from initial sketch to final color.

Robot Fetish

I have an unhealthy infatuation with all things robot. I use an Android phone. My favorite movie is Terminator 2. I cheered as Watson destroyed the inadequate humans at Jeopardy. And I have recurring dreams of the robot apocalypse. But it seems snyart has taken her obsession for our robot overlords to a different level. She has undertaken a journey to doodle 365 robots over the course of a year marking February 2012 as the anniversary. Not surprisingly, 2012 is also the year the Mayans predicted our downfall. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Prepare to be assimilated below.
