An Analog Drawing Project About Personal Data

I forget how I stumbled upon this, but it's one of my favorite things to have discovered this year. Dear Data is a year-long drawing project between two women, who get to know one another by exchanging postcards with hand-drawn data visualizations.

Each week they choose a new topic, from a week of complaints or compliments to a week of desires or smiling at strangers. They begin collecting the data, it's slow, methodical, detailed, insightful and often bringing to life hidden patterns.

Every postcard includes a drawing on the front, while the back includes the key to reading and deciphering it. What makes this all the more fun is that each of them also keeps a record of the entire process from that week. You'll find notes, initial sketches, photos and plenty more.

They've just completed 52 full weeks, so there's plenty to see. You'll quickly discover that the data reveals a beautiful collection of aesthetic patterns, lines, and scribbles. The fact that there's a purpose behind each mark is all the more impressive.

Tumblr of the Week: Bela Unclecat

Our first time crossing paths with Bela Unclecat was when she sent us back one of our Doodle Addict postcards from Japan with one of the most charming and lively doodles we have received. Just look at it! How many animals can you count in the left corner alone? There is a chicken thing standing on a cat that is holding a stack of tea cups that the chicken thing is drinking out of and there is a stream of tea coming into the teacup from a teapot, suddenly we've travelled all the way to the opposite side of the picture, what a magical journey that was and we're nowhere near done seeing all the sights there are to see.

There's plenty more where that came from on Bela Unclecat's tumblr. I just can't get enough of her nostalgically playful universe.

I Love Hate Mail

You'd normally be offended if someone insulted you, and you'd probably be doubly offended if you'd had to pay for the privilege. But if Mr Bingo insults you, you're one of the lucky ones. Every time Mr Bingo advertises new slots for his Hate Mail project they sell out in a few minutes. I've tried to get myself some Hate Mail 3 or 4 times now with no joy.

The idea is simple. You pay Mr Bingo a tiny sum (I can't remember how much off hand) and he sends you an original… hand-drawn… one of a kind… insult!

Which means the purchaser gets a signed original drawing, the postman gets a laugh and a story to tell his mates, and the whole world is a little happier. It definitely makes me a little happier to see new Hate Mail examples pop up around the internet.

And if you're unlucky in your quest for Hate, like me, you are now IN luck. Because some of Mr Bingo's favourite Hate Mail has been collected in his new book which is imaginatively titled, Hate Mail. The book will be available October 11th, and if you follow Mr Bingo on twitter he's been announcing a bunch of (UK) dates where he will be doing book signings and things like that.

A Case for Snail Mail

Take a look at these hand-drawn postcards by Carolyn Sewell. Colors, letters, lines and curls, I might just beg to be her peep.
