Hellohead Portrait Swap

hellohead was an exhibition held at Cargo London for one night only. 60 top illustrators and designers were randomly paired up to create portraits of each other, and as you can see the results were amazing!

The work was all put on show for the night and a silent auction was held in aid of the National Autistic Society. It looks like it was a great success as they raised over £2,000 for the charity.

The day after the show Zeena Shah and Bread Collective hosted a screen printing and mask-making workshop for children with Autism and Asperger Syndrome. I love seeing art used for such positive means, and there's some great photos of the workshop on Bread Collective's website.

Milk Does A Sketchbook Good

Portraits made with oil paint, that is what Soey Milk (an artist from Pasadena, California) is best known for, but I wanted to look beneath all of that and showcase the drawings you'd find in her sketchbook.

I think you'll agree, I found them to be just as dramatic and seductive.

Night of the Drawn Dead

It's the time of year where all our hearts flutter with fear. It marks the return of The Walking Dead and Zombie Walks all over the world, but nothing will prepare your weak heart for Rob Sacchetto's Zombie Portraits. Rob turns your everyday googly mug into delightfully decaying masterpieces, so that even if you sleep with Max Brook's Zombie Survival Guide, you'll still be left shaking with fear beneath your bed.

You can (and should) read the whole process over at Rob's website, but it basically goes a little something like this: First he takes your photograph and draws your likeness with a pencil, which he considers the most crucial part of the whole process. "Likeness is paramount" he says, because "placement, proportion has to be spot on." Rob adds, "It's during this process that I look at light, facial structure and I go about creating a zombie that is still recognizable. I don't use any references, by the way, all this chaos comes from my twisted psyche." He then adds watercolor flesh-tones, which gives it a 'trauma' look and follows it up with ink to highlight all the small details that make his Zombie Portraits so unique. In all, it takes him between 3 to 6 hours to complete a portrait.

See more ghoulish examples below, while you still have a pulse.

Winning Drawings

A few weeks ago, we did a giveaway where I asked you guys to submit a quote that speaks of who you are. I picked two winners and drew them incorporating their quotes. Without further ado, I would like you to meet two friends of DA, Josh LaFayette and Ellie (aka comfits). Josh's "favorite hobby is breakfast." And Ellie is "like an octopus on roller skates."

Take a look at the process, from the initial pencil drawing to pen to watercolor and collage.

Josh and Ellie, check your mailboxes soon. I think I may now know your faces better than you do. :)

Giveaway: A Hand-Drawn Portrait of You by Jamie Tao

That's Okat. You may know him as the founder of Doodlers Anonymous. His dark disheveled hair, crazy full beard, distinct eyes and nose - I love capturing it on paper. Like he said, "It's like looking in a mirror, but better."

A face says so much. Ever since I can remember, I have always loved drawing them. My most recent project has been to combine my two favorite things - face and type - to portray a person and the essence of who they are.

This is where the cool part comes in. I'm doing a giveaway. I want to draw you.

For the chance to win a 9"x12" signed, hand-drawn portrait of you, all you have to do is leave a comment below with a quote or phrase that best describes your personality. We'll pick one winner based on the quotes submitted. (This quote/phrase will be incorporated into your portrait. The winner will also have to send us a photo of themselves.)

The winner(s) have been chosen!

With over 70 comments, it was difficult to choose just one winner, so instead I chose two. Good on you. :) Congrats to Josh LaFayette ("My favorite hobby is breakfast.") and Ellie Kneeland ("...like an octopus on roller skates"). Please send over a close-up photo of you so I can see all the details of your wonderful faces.

Thanks for everyone's participation. What a fun way to get to know our members!

And keep on the lookout! We're making these hand-drawn portraits available for purchase in our shop very soon, so you can order your very own.

Raindrops, Cats & Hearts

Dorset, England's Heidi M is quite gracious. She's eager to share her process and what makes her "tingle and buzz with creativity." Take her up on the offer: peek into her sketchbook where she's developing characters for a new story, and take a gander at her hand-painted greeting cards, including one of Frida Kahlo. You’ll fancy Heidi’s
pencil-sketched watercolor portraits. They’re pretty and polite.
