Matchbook Paintings

These images will make you look twice, and maybe two more times after that. Joseph Martinez paints inside matchbooks with such precision and patience you wont believe it until you watch the video for yourself. The art is often times smaller than the size of a dime.

I can't imagine anything more fascinating than seeing these matchbook paintings in person. Fortunately, those of you in San Francisco will have the opportunity at his upcoming show, A Little Piece of the Bay.

Scroll down, and you'll be asking yourself again and again how he's achieving such depth, shadows and detail.

Buried In The Attic

Two years ago I waved hello (cyber-wave that is) to Caroline Gaedechens and asked her to please send over a few sketchbook pages. Then somehow I forgot all about it... until today! Thank you Gmail unlimited storage, you da-best.

I've never had an attic in my house, but I imagine this is what it feels like to have a spring-clean and find a treasure. A gentle, quiet, hand-drawn treasure in the attic.

Milk Does A Sketchbook Good

Portraits made with oil paint, that is what Soey Milk (an artist from Pasadena, California) is best known for, but I wanted to look beneath all of that and showcase the drawings you'd find in her sketchbook.

I think you'll agree, I found them to be just as dramatic and seductive.

Accomplished

He's in his early twenties and has already amassed an endless amount of drawings, sketches, paintings and comics. I'm not even sure what to post from his flickr archive because I love it all, from the colors in his paintings to his pupil-less people and panel-heavy drawn pages. That was a mouthful, but his work truly is overwhelming. Meet Saman Bemel Benrud.
