Tattoo Tears

I got her CD (in trade) back in 1995 while working at the CD Exchange. It was probably the best job ever. I doodled and listened to music all day. The customers of the shop were always local music fanatics who came in just to chit chat and bullshit. It's been forever, but Nan is back on my playlist today. This begs the question, what are you listening to right now? and can I get the answer in a doodle (send to iamokat {at} gmail {dot} com)?

Barefoot Sneaker

It is almost too ridiculous for me to comprehend, but my most popular piece of art is this quirky doodle I did on a pair of Vans. If you like custom anything, my barefoot sneaker and more than a hundred other custom shoes are featured in a book by MAKI, titled Custom Kicks; an engaging and visually inspirational 224 page publication that belongs on everyone's coffee table. DIY Screen Printing

The doodle above was inspired by the home made screen printing set-up I built for myself almost three years ago. I photo copied the instructions from a book at the library (I wish I could remember the title) and made it with some found wood, a purchased screen and a few hinges. Pretty easy to set-up and the test prints that followed were even more fun than the finals.

I've always loved the medium and have recently been motivated to pull the dusty old thing out of the closet and get my hands dirty again because of reading Print Liberation: The Screen Printing Primer. It's an excellent read; with history, photos, illustration and step-by-step instructions for both the newbie and the advanced inker. Click here for some photos from my personal ghetto set-up.

How It Started

It only makes sense the idea was generated drawing in a journal. I dug back a few and found the book where I remembered writing it down (reference above image). I guess a bit over 10 months ago now... Not bad. It's nice to see an idea go from a random thought one night to the actual execution of it. Although it's nothing more than a pretty blog right now, we do have some exciting plans over the coming weeks/months. Stay tuned, spread the word or subscribe to our mailing list. To tease a bit, we'll be featuring some pages from the sketchbook of the amazing Nate Williams early this week.

Scrambled Letters

I was flipping through my sketchbook and found these letters from a slew of different hand-drawn typefaces I was experimenting with. The first person to unscramble the letters and leave a comment below with the right answer will win a free t-shirt and some stickers from the areyougeneric.org catalog. Disclaimer: The combination of letters above could very well spell many different words, but there is only ONE right answer when I put them together -- guess that and you win.
