That's Gross, I Love It

Gore, girls, and robots everywhere--I think I'm in love. I tripped over the art of Lauren YS today when I read about her upcoming exhibition, "Behind You." I was instantly hooked in by the in-your-face girliness dripping with attitude. Her portfolio is gushing with colors that remind me of rainbow swirl ice cream, deceptively sweet at first glance until you start noticing all the nasty little details.

*Make sure to to watch her video after the fold, where she flips through 4 complete years of sketchbook drawings from her Moleskine.

Personal Greatness

I have been a huge fan of James Victore for awhile now. He has made a living in the design world by doing exactly what he wants and by not compromising. I love his perspective of clients being comrades, loving what you do, and putting yourself in your work by making it personal.

Victore's work is filled with scribbles, scratches, and lots of personality. It rides the edge of being in your face and being transparent. He is one of the original doodlers. One of the original rebels waving his middle finger to advertising companies who think "we are stupid."

I was very excited when he opened up a Q and A through his website where designers, illustrators and anyone else could write in to get his advice. He has taken on subjects like Self Doubt, Creative Burnout, All-nighters, etc… It's been very inspiring to have someone who has done such great work take on questions that all makers have had at one point or another. I will end this post with a quote from James in hopes you will visit his site, watch his videos and be as inspired as I am.

"No one can stand in the way of your personal greatness" -- James Victore

The Doodlers Anonymous 3-year
Birthday GIVEAWAY

We've just hit three years old this week.

I want this to last forever. Being a part of Doodlers Anonymous is the most fun thing I do in my day. Thank you to every single artist that has ever inspired me and continues to. To all the fans, readers and doodle addicts that visit us everyday, thank you for being a part of something that I am so passionate about.

As a thank you, we are going to celebrate this milestone with a ridiculously awesome GIVEAWAY. It's so good that I am seriously considering cheating so that I may win.

If you want to play along, simply draw us a really cool birthday card (no vector art please). Scan it or take a good quality photo of it and email it over to us. The team and I will vote on the one we like best and award them with great prizes. There is also a strong possibility two runner-ups will receive prizes as well, so be sure to participate.

Click here to get complete details of what you can win, but in summary: a $100 Gift Card at Blik, $75 at Thumbtack Press, art prints by Kate Bingaman Burt, Bianca Green, Chris Piascik and Sandra Dieckmann, plus a year subscription to Anorak Magazine and the list goes on…

To participate: let us know in the comments below and email your submission to editor{at}doodlersanonymous{dot}com by end of day, September 20th and be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter to get updates and announcements regarding the giveaway.

Touchy-Feely

We generally think about doodles two-dimensionally. But, Megan Whitmarsh's drawings leap off the page with colors that pop and shout, and the use of yarn, which adds texture and tactility to the art form. Treat yourself to this rare find.

Kinky Cameras

In December of this past year, I was asked to participate in a group show during Art Loves Design in the Miami Design District (same weekend as Art Basel Miami). All the others featured in the show were photographers, but me.

Wanting to keep within the same theme, I decided to call my exhibition: I Think Cameras Are Kinky and doodle as many cameras as I could prior to the show. The above photo is one of a Holga camera, but I did about 29 other cameras by week's end. The hard part was getting hold of the actual camera for each drawing. I plan on posting the entire set soon, maybe even as prints. Let me know if you are interested. Here's another one of a Rolleiflex and one more while in progress.
