Feel the Fear and Do it Anyway

Adrienne Vita's ink, watercolor, acrylic and gouache illustrations capture and promote everything good and true -- coexistence, wanderlust, individuality, friendship and family. Her beautiful menagerie of wild animals are seeped in color and pattern-- they're warm and bright and comforting in image and message. Adrienne says each piece comes from her intuition and meditations. Viewers can't help but become admirers, and admirers can't help but feel a sense of peace. Thank you to UncommonGoods for making the acquaintance.

Drawn Tattoos

The lovely and incredibly talented Wendy MacNaughton has been illustrating tattoos (and the stories behind them) for the tumblr blog; Pen & Ink, and now (deservedly so) she is turning it into a book.

Wendy and her Pen & Ink collaborator Isaac Fitzgerald are in the final stretch of putting it all together, but not before reaching out to me with a last-minute call for submissions. Do you have a tattoo with a compelling story behind it? If so, they want it, and they want it now. Take a pic of your tattoo, write a few words with its story and send it to: penandinkproject {at} gmail {dot } com

Agony

Raffaele's Bafefit's biography describes the creatures in his portraits as "characters caught in between the thin line between life and death." This ceaseless purgatory, where even the smoothest of curves feel as sharp as Fugubiki knives, binds the personalities of each piece in a state of agony. And although you might not hear their caterwaul, you can certainly feel their desperation.

An Illustrated Life

Aitch, an illustrator from Bucharest (suddenly I realize that I've recently only been talking about female artists)… describes her work as "ranges from pink, cute, elegant, to sometimes creepy, semi religious, bizarre characters, mixed in surrealistic sets" and I can't agree more. It's amazing how she moves from the "cute & pink" to the "surreal & semi-religious".

She normally works on paper, toys, urban objects, and many shops around Europe. She's one of my latest discoveries (and one of my favourites!).

I follow her on Facebook where the talks about her illustrated life.

The Coolest Place I've Never Been

I never really believed that meeting girls in bars was such a great plan, but that was before I found out about The Doodle Bar.

"The Doodle Bar is a space where people have the freedom to enjoy a good scribble, have a drink and hook up with some fellow doodlers."

Sounds perfect right? The Doodle Bar is inside an old industrial building in Battersea, London. It's got pretty much everything you could want from a good bar – drinks, food, a ping pong table… and more importantly, a bunch of spaces that anyone is free to doodle on!

All I know about the bar are the snippets I've found on their website and around the internet. But I'm going to try and head down there before my month of guest posting here is over. I'll report back with some photos of the bar, and any doodles I do (or see) while I'm in there. And I'll of course keep you all updated on my quest for the love of a good doodler.

For anyone interested in checking it out, the closest stations are Clapham Junction (tube) and Battersea Park (overground)... I think. I'll see you there!

A Wrinkle in Time

Mark Powell makes incredible drawings on vintage envelopes dating back to 1852. He uses a simple Bic Biro pen to draw these aged faces that are as full of creases and texture as the envelopes they sit on.

Stereographic Animated GIFs

This has been passed around the internet and deservedly so. Dain Fagerholm is taking static pen and marker drawings and making them twitch and wiggle to our delight. His characters seem to lift off the page in pseudo 3D. I honestly can't stop looking at them, someone please knock me out of this trance.
