Our calendar project is coming to an end. We have amazing invited artists on board and a slew of prior showcase winners. We're down to the wire, in the final stretch, wrapping it up... you get the idea. So if I can make a humble suggestion, you know, friend to friend: hurry the heck up! Get involved by following three simple steps: (A) Doodle up the month of October 2012 (B) Submit your artwork (C) Pat yourself on the back and high five friends.
Seeing the calendar come together is so much fun, it feels wrong. Muahaha… I love it when a plan comes together!
P.S. For those of you new to DA, welcome! You can learn more about the calendar and how to participate here.
Process is everything to me. It's much of the reason why I started Doodlers Anonymous. I love seeing behind the scenes and early thoughts of artists, writers, any creative for that matter. Getting a glimpse of sketchbook pages no one was meant to see, or storyboards that show development of what worked or didn't work is many times more inspiring than the final outcome.
Three Legged Legs has done an incredible job of documenting their collaboration with Droga5 to bring to life an animated ad spot for Method Cleaners and Virgin America. The spot itself is a minute-long animated ride in the sky with illustrated characters and exaggerated stereotypes. Their process of going "…from a super quick shitty thumbnail doodle-fest, to a more elaborate After Effects animatic," is so wonderful to see come to life, and you'll love the end result.
Maybe it's sheer nostalgia for Tootsie Pop's wise Mr. Owl, but there's something so endearing and friendly about an illustrated owl. The real bird of prey, with its exorcist-head-swivel action, is admittedly kind of creepy; but for some reason, its drawn incarnations seem utterly playful and downright cordial. The above is courtesy of Kendra K.
Scroll though the extras for some more fun images, including my mom's vintage owl oven mitt, which I've lovingly confiscated.
Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall…. all you have to do is draw!
Oh Father Time, how you toy with us. And while we usually mark the passage of time with X’s on little numbered squares below stock images of kittens or mechanic-shop ads… next year will be different.
Next year we refuse to allow precious time to be recorded on kitch glossy images—we’re taking matters into our own hands and we’re recruiting you!
Finally, after much anticipation, we’re releasing another home-grown Doodlers Anonymous product. And it’s a good one. DA is creating its own 2012 Calendar and giving our members a chance to contribute!
Calendar artwork will be split between invited artists and showcase winners. The call for submissions is now open for the month of October, check out the guidelines for the fine print.
Happy drawing and good luck!
