Member Spotlight: Alice Savage

I discovered Alice's work during our Doodlebomb open call. Her submission transformed a fashion model into a surreal creature standing against tentacles and stars.

It was subtle and delicate, but it definitely caught my attention. As did the rest of her sketchbook, where there's lots of flowing long hair, female bodies and sometimes even a hint of watercolor. She lives on flickr and alicesavage.eu Welcome to DA, Alice.

The Great Beard Adventure

Ever been engulfed with visual thoughts of beards with amorphous bodies, killer beards from outer space, or a large beard colony? I have and because of that I went scouring the internet to find others that may have encountered those same visions. I was not disappointed.

Get ready to embark on the Great Beard Adventure.

Member Spotlight: Benjamin Murphy

The talent in our community never ceases to impress me, and as the pool of members grow, so do their variety of medium.

That leads me to the discovery of Benjamin Murphy, who likes to draw directly onto walls with electrical tape as his ink. Yes, that's right, sticky, sticky, black tape and he's pretty damn good at it too. You can find Benjamin in the U.K. or at his blog, ALL DESTRUCTO.

In Good Company

Just don't ask E.A. Small to do your portrait. Her unforgiving pen depicts moles, wrinkles, lots of bad hair, and perhaps the largest collection of ugly sweaters around. Her art is as unpretentious as her cast of characters, but just as entertaining.

Member Spotlight: Ed Milsom

Droog79 is the alter-ego of salty-faced Ed Milsom, who spews “brain ink over scarce supplies of paper” when he’s not falling off waves in southern Mexico.

Alluring work that captures the patterned chaos of the sea. Check out
his doodles and tshirt art on his flickr feed and blog. Righteous.

GIVEAWAY: Maria Gil Ulldemolins Tote Bags

Let's face it. We at DA are major suckers for hair drawings, simply because of the nature of them; the intricate and delicate line work that takes up so much patience and time. And of course, because they look amazing. Maria Gil Ulldemolins creates these kinds of drawings and we absolutely love them. And what's even better is that Maria's offered to give away two of her tote bags with these beautiful illustrations on them.

Just leave a comment to be in the running. You have until Friday (October 22nd @ 3pm EST) and we'll randomly pick TWO lucky winners. Good luck!

105 comments and 2 names randomly drawn. Congrats to Jenni Sparks and La Cuenta Cuentos and of course thank you all for participating. For those of you interested in the beautiful work of Maria Gil Ulldemolins, you can always visit her Etsy shop to get your hands on her goodies.

Take Me With You

Last week I took my little brother to the movies to see Iron Man 2. He's only five, so he's growing so much every day. During the big fight scene, he pulled at my arm and (speaking some with his little open mouth, but mostly with his huge blue eyes), whispered something like "Lisa, I am so glad this is not in 3D".

That's something that happened last week. And as much as the moment fills me up, I know the specialness of it doesn't read so good to a third person. So when I crawl into the comic drawings of Aidan Koch, I wonder how he does it.

I wonder how he can take something as elusive as a moment, and neatly wrap it up in a page of loose, inky marks and quiet grey lines. Is there a secret technique to not just show someone what happened, but pull them into it with you?

I'll leave my thoughts in the comments, because they'll be as good as yours....
