The Magic in a Book

With over 1000 images, a carnival of mediums (water color, oil, collage, marker, and ink), and a retro dont-blame-me-when-it-gets-stuck-in-your-head kind of song, Reeo Zerko's stop-motion animation will make your lips curl in delight. As if this weren't enough, below the fold are images of the incomprehensible talent which drips (like my drool) from each page of his sketchbook. Damn he's good.

Drawn Intermission

Anton Marrast makes surreal pictures. He plays with photographs he's taken himself and edits them together to create his digital art. You can see some of them featured in his interview over at Empty Kingdom.

But he also loves working on paper. To me, his drawings seem to capture a perfectly still frame from some interesting movie that has yet to come out. I want to know the story behind each one of them.

She Doesn't Even Go Here!

Do you remember in Mean Girls, when Crying Girl just wants to bake a cake filled with rainbows and smiles? So many feelings, no place to share them!

Well, these eight lady-pals have a lot of feelings, too. So they decided to collect them all into a rad little zine! Sad Girls features a few of my favourite illustrators, such as Kaye Blegvad and Tuesday Bassen. It's like a cake made of rainbows and smiles, but for your eyes! Haha, maybe not. I don't know. Anyone who's never seen Mean Girls will be wondering what the funk I'm going on about here.

Enough words, bring on the sweet hand-drawn portraits!

Human Faces For Days

Is there anything nicer to draw than a human face? There's just something about two eyes, a nose and a mouth (and a bit of human flesh) that can lull an HB into sweet, happy, auto-pilot. I like that every hand-drawn face, no matter how similar, is never the same. The slightest twitch of a wrist can make a frown into a seductive smirk, or a wink into a lazy-eye.

I reckon Laura Gee shares my affection for doodling faces! She's an illustrator/set-maker living in London, and this is a peek into her hand-drawn facial records. See more drawings on her (kinda-new) blog Lone Drawings.

Climbing Hand-Drawn Mountains

If you could have any super power, which one would you choose? How about the superpower to actually crawl inside a drawing and feel, breath, touch and stomp around in this hand-drawn fantasy land? How sweet would that be.

To all you genies and leprechauns out there... please hook me up! I'd really enjoy an afternoon stroll through these creamy pencil landscapes by Maria Gosselin. I'd bring a friend, too. Looks like it might get a bit wild in there.

Exhale

"Samare" is a delicate and romantic stop-motion film by Moscow-born Nicolai Troshinsky. The short is about flirtatious movement. The animation dances across the pages of books, and everything from dandelion petals to flickering candlelight is propelled by the intimacy of breath.

Troshinsky himself seems as active as his lens—working with children's literature publishers, teaching storytelling and cinematic language courses, and developing experimental games. You can help support and get a glimpse of his newest film "Astigmatismo" on his website.

His work will take your breath away.

Takeout Cats with Cheese & Pickles

Do you like cute domestic animals? Me too. Do you like pizza slices and ice-cream? Wow, same here! So I was thinking... put them both together and it's double the fun, right?

I reckon so. Now lucky for us, Ohara Hale is serving up a cat-takeaway menu for us right now. Burger cats, egg cats, cats with a cherry on top. There might be something *kind of* icky about picking pepperoni off cat fur... but hey, it's fricken great eye candy!
