Hungry Artist Will Letter for Lunch

Drawing and eating are two of Lauren Hom's favorite things. Her motto of "Work hard, snack often" gets put to good use with her Will Letter for Lunch project. Lauren noticed how commonly chalkboard menus are drawn up by restaurant staff with no pizazz, and she couldn't help thinking she could do it better herself. So she did!

She does not have any set prices for her work and never gets paid money for her hand-drawn lettering. The twist is her quirky stipulation that any food she writes about must be served to her. On her site she describes what she lettered and what she lunched at the restaurants she visits. Her eating adventures range from humble snacks (for the "Mayo Party" sign you can see beneath the fold she was paid in a taste sample of every mayonnaise in the restaurant and also got to take two jars home with her) to epic feasts for a queen (for writing the entire menu in the photo above she got 7 plates of food + cocktails and wine). Type & Time: Drawn Typewriters

The sound is seductive: typebars striking ink ribbon; the bell of the carriage return swinging left. In my selective nostalgia, typewriters were never used by anyone except authors - typing stoically in a room with light filtered through plantation shutters, in the company of scotch glasses and a wastebasket of crumpled pages. The typewriter embodies a writing process that is hard and stark and dirty and mechanical. Itís a symbol of the beauty of process, the struggle of wordsmithing. And so my love for the typewriter is also a love for its aesthetic. I am giddy for illustrations of vintage typewriters, drawings where you can almost smell time and dust preserved. Here are some of my favorites.

Drawing the Cityscape in His Head

Bricks, windows, arches, curves, angles, roofs... you name it, if it's part of the city architecture, it's very likely Daniel Van Der Noon has drawn it.

Everything about his art inspires me. They are all hand-drawn and inked directly onto a wall, window, or canvas. No prior sketching or mapping. It's just one stroke here, another line there and soon enough buildings and rooftops appear.

In his own words, "I like to travel a lot, visit new cities, see new places, hear new noises. Through these skylines I guess that the perks that I experience from traveling around are amplified in ink, and the memories recorded in these ongoing sprawls of images and text."

You'll find plenty to like in the following images, and I guarantee you'll especially enjoy the process videos after the fold.

Drawings to Make Your Crush Giggle

Are you not so smooth with the ladies? Does your mind blank out around cute guys? A Daily Pickup Line could turn your luck around. It's an illustrated collection by Alyssa Duhe of the funniest flirtations, with some of the classics that don't get old and also a ton of original jokes that your crush hasn't heard a million times already. We originally picked this blog out from our followers on tumblr to be the next Tumblr of the Week, but couldn't pass up the chance to help out those in need on Valentines Day. Plus, I wanna hear your favorite pickup line in the comments.

Journey of a Tiny Explorer

Umbra is a hand drawn animation, a mix of drawing and pastel, that I came across about a year ago. It is still one of my favorites. Simple drawings with such a huge impact. The animation conveys such great emotion. I must have watched this a million times. I have a little folder in my bookmarks for links to watch when feeling a little in the dumps creatively. This video is at the top of the list. I hope you love it as much as I do.
