Sky High

Last night I flew to the west coast and was stuck up in the air for five hours. I killed the time by listening to The National, Band of Horses and a little Mumford and Sons. I didn't have my sketchbook but I did find my travel itinerary to draw on. Here are a few of the doodles I made while waiting to get back on land. Oh, and by the way, warm greetings from a very rainy California.

Heavy Color

I've followed Mario Kolaric (aka Sretan Bor) for a little while now and have gotten use to him posting black-and-white illustrations for his series of "dark" zines, but recently something of color has been coming up in my image feed.

I was surprised to learn it was him behind the colorful strokes of overweight bodies in splendid pose and action. He looks to be having lots of fun with (what seems like) a new set of felt pens. Love it!

Featured: Clemens Behr

I secretly refer to him as "Clemens The Great." It's true. Because his work is truly that good.

I can't remember when I discovered Cle's work. It must have been a year or two ago. But I do remember my reaction when I first saw the chaotic juxtaposition of basic geometric shapes, sharp angles and bold lines. It's the same reaction I get every time, even after frequent visits to his site. My jaw drops to the ground, my eyes get watery from not wanting to look away or blink for an instant.

We at DA are nothing short of ecstatic to have this exclusive "Doodle Interview" with Clemens Behr. He has also shared with us some of his recent works and an inside peak inside his very colorful studio brimming with tapes and boxes.

Enjoy the interview and the extra goodies. And here's a tip I've learned: It's okay to blink.

Lots of Black

I've been so busy the last few weeks that I've barely had time to breathe. From moving to last-minute trips and trying to keep up with my own personal work, I've been a bit nonexistent on DA. But here's something to make up for the lost time. You'll be impressed.

A few weeks ago, I purchased "Elephant," a truly wonderfully crafted art and visual culture magazine from the U.K. (Really, there's no competition so run out and get it!) In it, I found the work of Bruno 9li. His work is intense, to say the least, and it is evident he lives in his own world, a bold and beautiful one. I would love to get lost in that world even though I'd be a little afraid. I'd walk around with one eye closed the whole time, but with a humongous smile on my face.

Good Habits, Clean Living

I just received the mother of all packages from Chris Piascik. Long time readers of DA should be quite familiar with his work by now. A simple search on the site reveals we've posted about his talent for type and doodles almost a dozen times in the past year and a half.

The man just doesn't stop. So what came in the envelope of goodies? Three zines (one a collaboration with Vaughn Fender called Eternally Unsatisfied but Tirelessly Optimistic), a limited-edition letterpress print, some stickers and a few loose doodles. Take a peak for yourself »

Fax Ex-Machina

Four Brazilian Artists. Four UK Artists. Three fax machines. One exhibition called "Fax Ex-Machina."

Earlier this month, the KK Outlet in the UK and POP Gallery in São Paulo simultaneously hosted a live art exchange between Brazilian and UK artists through the use of the fax machine. "High taxes and blindsided customs laws make it impractical to import and export art in and out of Brazil. Using the lo-fi means of fax machines we aim to avoid these extortionate charges and showcase young talent in and outside of Brazil."

The participating artists included the likes of Ramon Martins, Eduardo Recife, Elisa Sassi, Carlos Dias, Andrew Clark, Billie Jean, Mcbess and Jimmy Turrell.

Great concept. Great art. Simply great all around. Take a look at some of the photos from this extra cool event.

Fill It Up

Jeremy Pettis doesn't shy away from color and that's a great quality in a designer man. Check his doodle set on flickr. I just moved into a new apartment and I keep thinking about wanting every single one of his drawings framed, scattered and filling up my wall in its entirety. Imagine the beauty!

As an added bonus for typography lovers, Jeremy has created a typographic study for every letter of the alphabet using animals as his subject. Great stuff here. The study includes initial sketches and his developmental commentaries for each. Jeremy says, "Normally, a person's relationship with a word lasts milliseconds, or maybe seconds depending on how long and complex the word is. With this project I'm hoping to change all of this." Scroll to the right when you visit his site.
