Steinberg: The Master of Doodle

There's the king of pop and a king of rock, how about the king of doodle? If there was one I think the crown would have to go to Saul Steinberg. The playfulness and wit of his work has inspired countless artists after him and I think all of us doodlers really owe him one. I chose to mainly share his doodles on 3d objects as they are my favorites of all of his work.

Olle Eksell was a Master Doodler

I think if you know anything about the legendary Swedish Mid-Century designer Olle Eksell, it's probably regarding his 'ÖGON CACAO' design (the poster with those tasty looking eyes) BUT I'm guessing many people do not know that Eksell was such a brilliant doodler!

I've been a fan of Eksell's work for quite some time but I recently came across this doodle page of characters and I was astonished by a) how ridiculously fantastic they were and b) how similar my NOD characters resembled them! Great find and I can’t stop coming back to this page. My favorite is definitely the little puff ball in the bottom row middle column. I'm naming him Buff Bagginswell. Which is your favorite?

P.S. I wish my name was as cool as Olle Eksell!

Funny, Inventive Doodles of an Investment Banker

matches skeleton bird doodle

Saeed Attari is a 36 year old investment banker from Bahrain and married with two children. Seems like a serious guy, but we know that doodle addicts come from all walks of life. In fact, Attari’s doodle muse is an imaginary pet named iBird! His doodles of iBird’s shenanigans are always interactive, incorporating mundane objects and contextualizing them into something exciting. These doodles look as simple as can be, but the ideas behind them pack a good punchline. Whether it’s food, phones, or his children’s toys, it seems like Attari can’t look at anything around his house without imagining what kind of trouble iBird would get into with it. It takes a good sense of humor to look at ordinary stuff lying around you on a daily basis and find a fresh way to have fun with it! Follow @ibird_art on instagram to keep an eye on iBird’s mischief.

#buckmydoodle: Use this tag as an excuse to customize your own holiday Starbucks coffee cup

Never mind coloring books, now there's Starbucks coloring cups by yours truly. With all the stupidity this week surrounding this brand's caffeinated cup of joe, I've decided to give you all an opportunity to add your own timely holiday doodles, colors, shapes and icons so you can turn this dumb ass #firstworldproblem into an excuse to celebrate drawing.

Download the template here and tag your custom doodle cup #buckmydoodle and I'll share the submissions in a gallery here on Doodlers Anonymous. Cheers!

Doodling the Mystical

Sometimes I peek into the hashtag #doodlersanonymous on instagram just to see what kind of trouble doodle addicts are cooking up. In today’s case, @nothingwolf’s Inktober series that he has been sharing on our hashtag got me really excited. The artist is Federico Tobon, who also goes as wolfCat. Diverse lines vary between thick black or fine dotting, the strong alongside the delicate in mysterious harmony. The symmetry of simple shapes form compelling compositions that naturally pull your eyes toward the peak of their design. I enjoyed his series of doodles on sheet music, with crazy characters creating chaos over the orderly notes. Clearly, wolfCat is not one to follow the rules and the results are nothing short of mystical.
