Japan and Mexico

I recently discovered the art of Monica Barengo when I came across some illustrations she did for the Australian Womankind magazine. These are drawings from two separate series on Mexico and Japan. The Mexican series revolves around bees and flowers, the Japanese one around cats and food. The drawings pull specific imagery from two very different cultures in mature and elegant forms, with whimsically surreal elements. The Japanese series made me so hungry, I’ll leave you to enjoy the thin lines and muted, earthy colors on your own.

Ricardo Munoz Izquierdo

The peculiar paintings and drawings of Ricardo Munoz Izquierdo are reminiscent of crude street art, but have a charm and skill that shows through. The work builds strange narratives using pop culture icons, skeletons, and piles of poop. Check out more more work on his flickr page.

Making the Grade

Israel is inspiring: the history and culture, the sand and sea, the light and grace. Bezalel, the Jerusalem-based Academy of Art & Design, has cultivated a bounty of talented and progressive artists across the disciplines. Because I’m aware of Bezalel’s reputation, I expect a certain caliber of work from its students. But I was, admittedly, sucker punched. Gabriella Barouch’s sketchbook is mature and elegant—the composition, the colors, the delicate patterns. There’s innate talent, and there’s training. Clearly Gabriella was blessed with both. Hard to believe she still has a year left of school.

What a Brute!

Erika Medina’s project-character Bruno is grotesque, yet adorable. He is asymmetrical-- with three pupils and only two eyes. He's got a fetish for ankle boots with mini heels and must spend time in mud or he’d lose his teeth.

Erika is interested in how different cultures imagine and depict the “grotesque”. Meet the many versions of Bruno-- inspired by Erika's description, and incarnated by the pens of artists across the Globe.

Somewhere in the City

I am surrounded by some extremely talented people and I'm a lucky girl for it. Alvaro Naddeo is an Art Director originally from São Paulo, Brazil and now lives in New York. Some random facts about him: He is extremely hard working and punctual, he takes the 6 train every day, and his sketchbooks are wonderful - wonderfully simple. He captures his daily experiences in the city with only black ink - buildings, food, receipts - and there you have it.

You Are What You Draw

It's not always the case, but in Jana's work I believe it is. Jana Traboulsi is from Beirut and you'll see that in almost everything that she draws.

I fell hard for her blog, where three years of drawn work is archived for you to see and almost everything is covered in her drawings, from daily objects to doodled wishes for peace and understanding.

A Far Away Place

I knew nothing about the Republic of Estonia. In fact, I had to do a little Wikipedia lookup just to get an idea of the region from which Liisa Kruusmägi is from. Liisa lives and works in Tallinn, the capital and largest city of Estonia, on the banks of the Gulf of Finland. A far away place from where I reside, and maybe all the more reason why I enjoyed her sketchbook so much.

Her website seems to just go on forever. You can scroll down past dozens of drawings, illustrations and images of the town and characters that surround her everyday. I don't know Liisa, but I wouldn't hesitate to claim that she is never without a pen in hand.
