Deep Dark Fears

Everyone has those moments when a suddenly morbid thought hits you out of nowhere. Deep Dark Fears is a series of comics exploring those intimate, personal fears that mostly stem from your imagination getting darkly carried away. Many of these fears were confessed by strangers to the artist, Fran Krause, who is also an animator and cartoonist. It's equal parts gross and engrossing. I'm fascinated by the kind of person you must be to think of some of these.

Some are gruesome, some are funny, some are gruesomely funny. All of them are imaginative. This is unquestionably my favorite find recently, though you should prepare to cringe if you proceed.

Coloring Book Interview Series, #1: Kelsey Wroten

Kelsey Wroten is an art student and visual storyteller that we published through our open call for submissions and featured in our Coloring Book, Volume 3. Having seen none of her work outside the coloring book page before I looked her up, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Kelsey specializes in comics! I had to reach out to her for an interview so I could share her uncensored world of snappy dialogue and surreal situations with you.

Member Spotlight: Alvaro Diaz-Rubio

What luck. Here I am digging around our website for someone to feature when I stumble upon the work of Alvaro Diaz-Rubio and quickly discover he's an incredible artist and illustrator from South Florida that actually studied right down the street from our studio. It's a nice coincidence when that happens.

Alvaro's art takes me back to a time of vintage comics and being 13 years old trading gnarly Garbage Pail Kids cards outside the mall's convenience store. It's clear he draws all day long and even claims he'll most likely doodle on the inside of his coffin. His illustrations have appeared in publications like the Village Voice, LA Weekly and the New Times. Help me welcome Alvaro to Doodlers Anonymous and you can always check out more of his work at his website, Operation Underwear.

For something extra special, scroll down for a great time-lapse video of Alvaro drawing a quirky rendition of his lineage.

Make Comics with Josh Bayer

Josh Bayer is a prolific cartoonist, independent publisher and teacher based in New York City. I took Josh's Comics and Cartooning class in Brooklyn last year and learned a ton about the history of comics, ranging from early newspaper strips to Marvel's Golden Age to the alternative comics being made today. He also taught us his process, storytelling, drawing and inking techniques, and encouraged us to make our own comics using a number of different methods.

One of the best things about the class was being able to see Josh's sketchbooks in person. He usually works on a bunch of projects at once, over multiple sketchbooks. The pages are as intense as the drawings themselves. Layers of corrections, obsessive hatching, watercolor, and ink carved into the paper. Josh lives and breathes comics, and his artwork reflects that dedication and craft.

I had a really difficult time choosing just a few images to share here from the mountains of work he's created over the years. For more of Josh's drawings and comics, go to his tumblr, portfolio site, and online store. His latest comic is the amazing Raw Power 2.

A Nice Cup of Teagle

I've been getting really into comics lately, and that's probably one of the reasons that Jack Teagle is quickly becoming one of my favourite artists.

I'm told that envy and jealousy are terrible and pointless feelings, so I try my best to lock them away when I look at Jack's work. It would be easy to envy the way everything he does is awesome, or be jealous that he completely nails that elusive combination of a simplistic style and bold colours, or cry that it all seems so effortless (although I'm sure it's not). But I've found the best thing to do is let the awesome insanity of his work whisk you away into his little world for a while, and just be glad that it exists.

Jack seems to churn out work at a crazy pace, and he's been updating his tumblr this week with these new paintings. They're part of a show called Lost Plot at Here Gallery in Bristol, UK. The show opens on September 7th and runs right through to October 6th.

Lost Plot also features work from Liam Barrett, Rose Robbins and Simon Daly. If you'll be in or around Bristol in the next month you should definitely check it out.

Can Someone Please Translate This For Me?

Guten Tag! Auf Wiedersehen! That's about as far as my German goes. If only my second-grade German teacher had forced a few more foreign words into my soft young brain. I mean, one day we all made pancakes in class... is that even a German thing? Hmmm.

It's lucky then that my favourite German comic artist Nadine Redlich speaks mostly in pictures! Her drawings are cute, a bit smutty, and only sometimes need a helpful whisper from Google translate. Also her chill new series of "ambient comics" are surprisingly nice to stare at for a while.

Genießen! (that means "enjoy" in German.... I think)

Great Heights

Comic-style storylines, fine architectural detail, and precise drafting. I could get lost in the graphic and textual layers. I'm enamoured. Take a gander at Timothy J. Reynolds's Moleskins and you will be too.
