June's Guest Contributor: Rik Catlow (aka rikcat)

I first discovered and wrote about Rik Catlow's drawings back in September of 2012, during a member spotlight on his "urban pop art" style. I've been following his updates ever since and his tricked-out collages just keep getting better.

It's my pleasure to introduce him as our guest contributor for the month of June. He'll be blogging alongside our usual team and highlighting artists and other visual finds that are sure to peak your interest.

In the meantime, be sure to check out his incredibly cool paint jobs on smashed aluminum cans. He's also got an Etsy shop filled with original handmade art and as an added bonus, we are giving away a Rik Catlow digital wallpaper that's hot off the presses for you to enjoy. Grrr! Thank Heavens for Old Books

The art from Ekaterina Panikanova's second ever solo show is brilliant, and a stark reminder that we need to hang onto the tangibles from our history. When I see this type of work I crave for the analog, and cringe to think about a future of digital audio books and downloadable reads. I still want the smell and feel of worn-out pages between my fingers. We're moving too fast. I need a breather. Stop, let's hold hands and look at the beautiful art together.

Member Spotlight: Anke Braatz

I love that Anke describes her sketchbooks as "everyday training." It's exactly on-point, as she uses them to practice her craft and quickly capture a moment of everyday life, page after page.

Beyond her sketchbook pages, what I like most about her work are the drawings on different papers that layer to form a perfect design and final illustration.

August's Guest Contributor:
Sara E. Barnes

For the month of August we are welcoming fellow blogger and illustrator Sara E. Barnes as a guest contributor here on DA. Sara is the creator and voice behind the wonderfully curated website Brown Paper Bag and is working towards her MFA (Illustration Practice) at the Maryland Institute College of Art.

Sara's own work is an amazing mix of color and collage of scraps, ink, paint, and embroidery. I'm fascinated by how the loose pieces of cut paper come together to reveal such a complete and controlled final artwork. I've gathered a few of my favorite works by her here to introduce you.

A Little Break from the Hustle and Bustle

Sometimes I crave the simple things.

Lots of white space. Scribbles that are easy on the eye. Something almost child-like and free, but with the neat hand of adulthood.

These hand-drawn collages by Ariel Aberg-Riger do the trick.

To me they say, "ahhh, relax a little, life is nice and a bit funny sometimes". That's what they say to me, anyhow. Enjoy!

The Biggest Doodle I've Ever Seen!

The title really says it all for this one! When my friend Maciej said he had a huge doodle to show me... well, my cheeks flushed a little and I began to think up a polite exit strategy. But the image he sent me was actually an ongoing doodle collage by illustrator Zach Johnsen. And yes, it is indeed huge and awesome!

For what seems like a long time now, Zach has been neatly collaging all of his drawings & rough sketches into one amazing continuous doodle. The length of this thing is amazing! I actually had time to reheat my mug of coffee in the microwave while I waited for the page to load. Go see what I mean... over here! click click!

Bonus round: For all my Where's Wally enthusiasts, here's a few special details that you can hunt for in Zach's crazy-big collage... best of luck!
