Tumblr of the Week: Dirty Library

Long-time friend of DA, Mr. Jess Smart Smiley is making a children's book he's quite passionate about. It's not often that I post about Kickstarter type projects, but I couldn't help falling in love with his cute monsters and playful scenes. The book is titled, Rumpus on the Run, and is Kickstarter's first "look-n-find" book.

Lucky for us, Jess passed along some of his sketches from over the years. Take a look below and make sure to check out his Kickstarter page, the rewards especially, he's even offering to draw some of you right into the book ;)

The Living Doodle: Turning Kid Drawings into Plush Toys

Heather and Tracy from Sunny Little Studio are bringing your kid's imagination to life by taking their flat 2D drawings and turning them into real-life plush toys. Just looking at some of their examples has re-kindled so much joy within me. Every creation is spontaneous and fun and the end result is some of the most creative plush toys I have ever seen. Wow... do I feel like a kid at a candy store.

Some will argue that children are the ultimate doodlers. They are uninhibited by the world around them and their imagination runs amok with unrelenting ease. As adults we often wonder how the imagery of children doodles would look like if it were the real world.

Korean artist Yeondoo Jung took on that challenge. He hand-picked a select number of colored drawings from 5-7 year old children and transposed them into real-world scenes. The end result is "Wonderland", a collection of photographs that are mesmerizing and sometimes even intense.

If we all lived in a world doodled by children as portrayed by Mr. Jung, our lives would be a colorful and poetic place.

A Doodler's Doodler

First off. Thanks DA for having having me for February, and OKAT for the really swell things you said. I will try my best to make this icy cold month all warm and bubbly on our insides.

Okay now to business. Maura Cluthe (aka: Fragmented) was easily the first artist that came to my mind to feature here. The first time I saw her stuff I was blown away. I instantly felt a kindred spirit and connection. She reluctantly agreed after much prodding (just kidding). Maybe it was the robots and monsters, or her eye grabbing textures or was it the hyperdoodles (as she calls them) or her expert design sense. I'm going to say it is all of that and more! Maura is the complete package. She just finished up a children's book titled It's Not Easy Being Brave that I can't wait to get my hands on. There are prints available at her online shop. Yay Maura!

Doodles for Kids

"If you please," said the stranger, "draw me a sheep." That simple line from The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry is exactly what I think of every time my pen hits the paper. The book captures what we miss by being grown-ups and a good reminder not to look at everything so literally.

Having two kids of my own, I am at awe by what they come up with and even more inspired when I see their thoughts spill onto paper. The following are some drawing books and toys both my children use daily that I highly recommend; even though, a few markers and paper are just as effective.

Scribbles by Taro Gomi, Thumb Doodles Book by Klutz, Aquadoodle's Travel Pad or Doodle Mat, Write & Learn Letter Pad by vtech, Little People Doodle Pro and Crayola's Bathtub Crayons.

Disclaimer: Although the above list make great "kid" gifts, I play with them just as often as they do.
