I recently discovered the art of Monica Barengo when I came across some illustrations she did for the Australian Womankind magazine. These are drawings from two separate series on Mexico and Japan. The Mexican series revolves around bees and flowers, the Japanese one around cats and food. The drawings pull specific imagery from two very different cultures in mature and elegant forms, with whimsically surreal elements. The Japanese series made me so hungry, I’ll leave you to enjoy the thin lines and muted, earthy colors on your own.See More »
Bradley Wind's Hungry Ghost series is based on a concept in Chinese folklore of beings living in a state of constant craving. When I look at their enormous empty bellies and mouths tragically too small to fill them, I can almost feel their pain. Even without knowing the mythology behind them, you get an eerie vibe from their blue bulbous bodies and bulging eyes. Drawn with pen and marker, every portrait has a character of its own and my mind can't help but float away with ideas about what each ghost's story could be.
Purring softly in the corner, curled up and licking itself, is DA's first mini-coloring book, and we suddenly realized that we never made the acquaintance. So, dear community, we're proud to introduce you to "The Quintessential, Quirky, Compendium of Cats!"
As submissions rolled in for our second coloring book, we noticed an undeniable theme. Cats from here till Sunday - cats wearing clothes, admiring cubist paintings, looking French, sipping coffee. So we hoarded (*ahem, I mean compiled) them like a crazy cat lady, knowing one day we'd find them a proper home, a book all their own.
And so the mini-coloring book was born! The book -- featuring 28 global artists in a mashup of styles-- is truly the cat’s meow, because it's not only creative and cuddly, it's charitable.
In honor of OKAT's own shelter cat, Mylo, Doodlers Anonymous and The Quintessential, Quirky, Compendium of Cats! is proud to support The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals® and its mission to save lives. (aspca.org)
Like anything from our shop, this will ship with a DA doodle sticker, bookmark and postcard. So color it up, get crazy with a crayon, and help support our feline friends!
Do you like cute domestic animals? Me too. Do you like pizza slices and ice-cream? Wow, same here! So I was thinking... put them both together and it's double the fun, right?
I reckon so. Now lucky for us, Ohara Hale is serving up a cat-takeaway menu for us right now. Burger cats, egg cats, cats with a cherry on top. There might be something *kind of* icky about picking pepperoni off cat fur... but hey, it's fricken great eye candy!
