Coloring Book Interview Series, #14: Chucho Nieto

Coloring books are a personal, therapeutic experience for me. Sometimes I can spend an hour (or even longer) filling in just a single page, which gives me a lot of time to think about the illustration I'm spending my focus on. Unlike the average coloring book, the Doodlers Anonymous coloring books include a list of all the artists involved and where to find them. That's how I ended up asking Chucho Nieto a bunch of the odd little questions that spark while I'm coloring away!

She Will Paint on ANYTHING

The people of Portugal who have the chance to see this street artist's work while they go about their daily business are so lucky. Her name is Vanessa Teodoro, also known as Supervan, and she will paint on anything. Cars, bodies, furniture, gigantic sunglasses–Seriously anything.

My personal favorite is her project titled "Mi Querida Casa," in which she created a real life drawn house environment where the furniture looks like doodles. Once she gets going, Teodoro wastes no space on whichever unusual surface she chooses to draw on. Every inch of her work has something crammed into it, making it hard for me to decide where to look first when a ton of striking images are demanding my attention at once. There's so much movement in her murals that I keep finding some witty little details tucked away in the crowd of her art that I skipped over at first glance. It's the kind of art you can just sit back and stare at while you sip your drink.

An Incredible Book of Drawn Vintage Cars by Lapin

We've featured French artist Lapin many times here on DA. Every time I look at his work it inspires me to drop everything and sketch. You too will fall in love with the composition of his lines and the mass collection of sketchbooks he's filled from cover to cover (look for yourself).

So it's with great joy that I learned today that he plans on publishing a book (Oldies but Goldies) with his incredible collection of drawn vintage cars found on the streets. I'll say it again, these are not drawings he's making back in his studio with photo references. He literally stumbles across a car and can't imagine passing it without respecting its history, so he sits down right then and there and draws it.

In his own words: "I project the dim light of those years in my book through my drawings and try to tell you the beauty behind the wrinkles, the experiences behind the broken parts and memories behind their dust so that they will be immortal."

He's running a campaign to raise funds to print this fantastic book. Follow the link and support this project (by doing so you'll also secure yourself a copy).

All The Pretty Ladies

One of my first true loves was Wendy, a run-down all-blue Nissan (Datsun) Stanza. Some of my most memorable stories (from my teenage years) could be traced back to my old "deep blue" and I couldn't help but reminisce while looking at the "Ladies" set of illustrated cars by France Belleville-Van Stone. It's easy to see why: Most of the watercolor drawings reveal the innate character and age of each vehicle, with strokes that feel almost like wrinkles on a person.

I wonder what Wendy looks like now. Is she just scrap at a junk yard? Or is she, even with all her imperfections, someone else's first true love.

Crash Into Me

While doing my routine afternoon browsing, I ran into Scott Teplin's weekly sketch blog. What I found was fascinating: a collection of car crash doodles. As you move from his earlier work to his latest work, airplanes are introduced and then both cars and airplanes are combined. Scott also provides a glimpse of the progress in between.
