Member Spotlight: Rik Catlow

Rik paints smashed up beer and soda cans with his style of "urban pop art." Drawing quirky characters and embellishing them with type, colors, and magazine cut-outs is what he does best and we love him for it. Click for a glimpse of what I mean or read about his process here.

And now I've just discovered that he's keeping a tumblr blog of sketchbook doodles called Scrib Dibbles and I just had to share. Follow along for improvised, one-color, pen on paper, character-driven awesomeness. Drawn and posted with no editing or erasing. Much respect!

There's a Forklift in My Pencil Case

Sometimes I worry that my doodlings might be getting a bit claustrophobic in that A5 notebook of mine. Would they be happier with a bit more space to play around in? Maybe some fresh air and a more interesting view than the last page's bum?

I'm keen to take notes from Luke Ramsey and Josh Holinaty - these boys know how to go BIG! For this mural in Canada, their doodling space was so huge they needed a forklift to reach the top!

It's probably best that I don't let the doodlings in my A5 notebook catch wind of this. They'd be so jealous. They might go on strike until I gave them more space to play around in. I guess I'll have to bust out the A3 butchers paper tonight, that'll keep them happy! For now.

Ladies and gentlemen, I'm your chief flight attendant today and on behalf of our Captain, welcome aboard Doodle Flight 58, non-stop service to the Canary Islands. In this flight you'll experience Natalie Ratkovski's travels to Gran Canaria.

At this time, make sure your seat backs and tray tables are in their full upright position. Enjoy your flight!

Tilt-A-Whirl

Ceskinís doodles are as inviting and playful as an amusement park. I want to spend a day inside them to wander amongst the happy faces and savor the eye candy.

Finger People Among Others

There's something really fantastic happening with Tania Toronja's drawings. You might be more familiar with her flickr name, visamexicana. Either way, her work is mesmerizing. It's a little creepy at first glance but her use of vibrant colors and shapes take it to a very fun, playful level. Take a look. You won't get scared, I promise.

I Want More

I know I'm not the only one who feels this way but I am going to make this announcement anyway.

I love flickr as much as I love surprises. And books. And Nutella.

It is so easy to discover so many great pieces of art and the artists behind them. I go on it daily and look forward to new uploads for me to find. Here are a few of my favorite discoveries in the recent past that have kept me happy and motivated. Eye candy ahead, enjoy.

It's Like Candy

Flipping through an illustration book I received in the mail today, the handy work of Hennie Haworth got me to stop flipping. And then I immediately googled her name. Hennie creates intricate illustrations with her own unique and personal touch. I feel like a kid again when I see her lines and colorful layered compositions. I want to touch them and put them in my mouth. No really, look at those marbles.
