I Faved You

My Sunday night ritual: get lost in the maze of the Doodlers Anonymous Flickr group, while droning in the background is the hazy sound of cheering fans and football commentators. There's so much talent out there that I have to make a conscious effort not to "favorite" everything I see.

Above by Olivia Jeffries and here are some of the others that I've recently fallen for.

Under and Over

We are all doodlers. No matter the background, no matter the profession. Give us a pen and paper and we'll scribble, notate, and draw our way through any topic or, like Vi Hart, through any insipid lecture.

Hart is a serial doodler and self-proclaimed recreational mathemusician. She has recently created a series of videos showcasing doodle exercises that will cause your jaw to drop and question your own intellectual prowess.

The videos are accompanied by Hart's rapid-fire narration about how mathematical concepts and theories can be expressed in doodle games.

There is no doubt Hart is a creative fiend-- the world and ivory tower need more like her. Watch Snakes + Graphs (above), or click out for Stars and Binary Trees.

Member Spotlight: Ed Milsom

Droog79 is the alter-ego of salty-faced Ed Milsom, who spews “brain ink over scarce supplies of paper” when he’s not falling off waves in southern Mexico.

Alluring work that captures the patterned chaos of the sea. Check out
his doodles and tshirt art on his flickr feed and blog. Righteous.

In the Thick of It

todernst/schabernack's illustrations suspend us in tension and time-- caught in a moment that is at once engaging and uncomfortable. You feel as if you're walking into the middle of a story that, like Morse Code, is hidden within the texture of meticulously-drafted dots and dashes. How different. How lovely.

Yelp Yack

I think it's safe to say that as artists we are always looking for a reason to draw -- something that will inspire us to take pencil to paper and draw on the mockingly bright white sheet. San Francisco based artist Jessica Wassil found it in the brutally real and often obnoxious voices of anonymous Yelp reviewers. She makes colorful drawings of the original review and rating and posts them to her blog weekly. After visiting Yelp Yack, you'll never read another review the same way.

Time Moves Faster

I have to apologize for the lack of updates on my part. When they say that NY moves fast, I had no idea they actually meant it. Work has been keeping me extra busy and I have also decided to go back to school at night. My love for DA, however, still runs deep, and to prove it, I have decided to share the pages of my sketchbook. I carry it in my purse at all times and it is slowly falling apart. But I am especially fond of this sketchbook because I have always wanted a red one (it's the little things that count).

The pages inside are a mix of brainstorming session notes, random thoughts, ripped scraps of paper and color. It's a little bit messy. It's a little bit playful. And I like to think that it's a little bit like its maker.

You Are What You Draw

It's not always the case, but in Jana's work I believe it is. Jana Traboulsi is from Beirut and you'll see that in almost everything that she draws.

I fell hard for her blog, where three years of drawn work is archived for you to see and almost everything is covered in her drawings, from daily objects to doodled wishes for peace and understanding.
