Human + Nature

Flowers growing out of skin. A flock of birds fluttering out from someone’s mind. Curious bears crawling over a hoodie. These drawings are connected by the common theme of humans and nature being intimately close, sometimes inseparably intertwined. Tatiana Karpova takes inspiration from real life objects or beings to insert directly onto the paper in ink, pencil or watercolor, but the finished image is something dreamy and impossible. A perfect balance of influence from humans and nature coexisting on paper.

Coloring Book Interview Series, #10: Amelia Grace

One of the best parts of our coloring book experience (besides the coloring) is finding new artists on every page that I might never have come across otherwise. Amelia Grace is the first artist from our newest Coloring Book (Volume 4), that I jumped to contact after I saw her page. Read the interview to find out about her spunky and fantastical troupe of characters!

Tumblr of the Week: Juliana Vomero

A wild deer-girl appears! She crossed my path today while I was browsing our followers on DA's tumblr and landed on the blog of Juliana Vomero. I instantly loved the way Juliana's drawings are unconstrained - you see them in sketchbooks on desks, on kitchen cutting boards, on the walls inside, on the walls outside! Something mysterious about it are the repeated images of the same character. There is little information given about Juliana or her art, which leaves me wondering what this pin-up deer-girl means to her.

Craving a Hug Right Now

Mmm, that looks cozy. I found myself thinking that repeatedly while looking through this series of drawings. Each girl is wrapped up tight in an embrace with an animal friend or with herself. Even though there are cutesy elements to every sketch, they seem drowned out by a looming sense of loneliness. Who knew hugging animals in sweaters could be so gloomy?

Ani Castillo describes drawing as catching her anxieties like butterflies and pinning them down to a piece of paper so she can see them a little bit more clearly. I couldn't have said it more eloquently myself.

Anna "Wana Bo Banna" Gogusey

Anna Wanda Gogusey is our French connection, hailing from across the way, landing in Texas where she does illustration, design and takes art classes for fun at a local college. Anna is a master of her style and has a distinct look to her work.

Her works contain many animals, sometimes on fire, most of the time without eyeballs and have a somewhat demonic, but friendly nature to them.

I met Anna when she interned for me during my agency days. We've been able to work on a couple projects since then including some large scale murals, zines and art shows. Always fun to work with and has great ideas and skills. She also does amazing embroidery!

Thanks Anna! We think you're super rad!

Carol in Wonderland

There is something fantastical about Carol Powell's drawings. They feature creatures and animals that are straight out of a Lewis Carroll novel. They are both familiar enough to be distinguishable, but quirky enough to arouse our curiosity.

Come down the rabbit hole and take a peek.

In the Thick of It

todernst/schabernack's illustrations suspend us in tension and time-- caught in a moment that is at once engaging and uncomfortable. You feel as if you're walking into the middle of a story that, like Morse Code, is hidden within the texture of meticulously-drafted dots and dashes. How different. How lovely.
