Odd Faces and Quirky Animations

I live to find random and happy projects like this one by Momoe Narazaki, a talented graphic designer and illustrator who recently launched a fun tumblr with close to one-hundred odd faces in funny and quirky animations. Never mind cat videos, just stare at these all day.

Heading Home

I'm having a moment over Michael Howard's Make Your Head Your Home series. It is a majestic mixture of architecture and portraits organically entwined with each other... and a good dose of flowers because why not? The illustrations are surreal, yet personally relatable. Any introspective artist can connect to the idea of living in your thoughts, or going to your mind palace. With the eclectic variety of faces and building styles, I'm choosing to imagine each person designing their own inner world into a sanctuary that is uniquely theirs, and proudly wearing it as a crown. With head space this extravagant, I wouldn’t want to leave my thoughts either. What would yours look like?

Don't Cry Over Spilled Coffee Doodle Over It!

Make something of your mistakes. That’s what Giula Bernadelli does, and the results are delectable. When her food is knocked over, she goes with the flow and creates stunning images using her fingers, utensils, or food instead of brushes. Plates, cups, and tablecloths are the canvas for her delicious doodles made with coffee, honey, ice cream, wine, fruit, nutella… Nothing on the table is safe! You can’t even be mad over the mess made when it's this visually remarkable. The finished results look so good, it’s wild to think they started out as a shapeless stain. Follow @bernulia on instagram if you wanna watch this coffee+doodle addict keep playing with her food.

Tumblr of the Week: Tonto Garabato

The sketches of Valeria Alvarez are often limited to black and white, sometimes an extra well-chosen color. Her drawings are mystic and whimsical, like postcards sent from strange places she visits in her mind.

What looks simple at first glance is actually made up of countless precise patterns within the shadows. A huge part of the magic lies in all the sketchy little details within the intricate shading and textures of her drawings. See more »

Cinematic Sketch Spreads

I came out of Artur Dabrowski's blog feeling like I just watched an epic fantasy, but I was actually looking through his sketchbook. Dabrowski's concepts are too large for one page, so in idle moments during subway rides, or in waiting rooms, he doodles up entire journals with dark and mysterious spreads. Between the cinematic composition and the mythic settings, I can practically hear dramatic score pieces swelling in the background.

Bold Shapes That Demand Your Attention

There's so much to like about the black and white spreads in Tyler Keeton Robbins's sketchbook. It's like having monochromatic dreams of symbols and patterns. His stark palette, gradients, archetypes, and organic shapes are intended to play in our collective unconscious. "Drawing, painting, or creating anything with impatient urgency," Tyler writes, "allows ideas to evolve before they're corrupted by reason."

Beyond the psychology, his sketchbook art is just plain stunning. I'm mesmerized by how he's created meaning and intricacy and depth with extreme limitation of color, shape, and space. You want to check this out.
