Tumblr of the Week: Tonto Garabato

The sketches of Valeria Alvarez are often limited to black and white, sometimes an extra well-chosen color. Her drawings are mystic and whimsical, like postcards sent from strange places she visits in her mind.

What looks simple at first glance is actually made up of countless precise patterns within the shadows. A huge part of the magic lies in all the sketchy little details within the intricate shading and textures of her drawings. See more »

Cinematic Sketch Spreads

I came out of Artur Dabrowski's blog feeling like I just watched an epic fantasy, but I was actually looking through his sketchbook. Dabrowski's concepts are too large for one page, so in idle moments during subway rides, or in waiting rooms, he doodles up entire journals with dark and mysterious spreads. Between the cinematic composition and the mythic settings, I can practically hear dramatic score pieces swelling in the background.

Bold Shapes That Demand Your Attention

There's so much to like about the black and white spreads in Tyler Keeton Robbins's sketchbook. It's like having monochromatic dreams of symbols and patterns. His stark palette, gradients, archetypes, and organic shapes are intended to play in our collective unconscious. "Drawing, painting, or creating anything with impatient urgency," Tyler writes, "allows ideas to evolve before they're corrupted by reason."

Beyond the psychology, his sketchbook art is just plain stunning. I'm mesmerized by how he's created meaning and intricacy and depth with extreme limitation of color, shape, and space. You want to check this out.

Heads Will Roll

I'm really enjoying the folksy art coming from Emmanuel Gutiérrez (aka EMMGUT) out of Costa Rica. His style feels familiar yet unique. I love how simple the drawings present in just black ink and then how they completely pop off the page when he adds the color and shading. His instagram feed is chock full of good stuff.

Tumblr of the Week: Adventure Journal

Today's Tumblr of the Week hasn't updated in a while, but it has enough cool content on it to share anyway. It's the adventure journal of Kailey, who tried to combat her shoddy memory span by drawing the events of her life every day. I love that it's really just a diary detailing what she did on a daily basis sprinkled with illustrative doodles. Some days there's only a few lines about how she feels and one thing she did. Others go into longer detail about all her activities and what specific drinks or food she had, to the point where the text has to squish itself around the drawings.

It's endearing to read all the little details that she decided were important enough to draw down so that she could remember it years later, like drinking hot chocolate after getting yelled at by a bus driver.

Tumblr of the Week: Hello Stranger

A good friend is someone who doesn't judge you, who always listens to you without making it about themselves, who you can simply sit in comfortable silence with… Perhaps these girls are onto something.

The tumblr we stumbled upon this week belongs to Korean artist Dan-ah Kim. Out of her expansive portfolio, one recurring subject that stood out to us were ladies in their undies with house plants. Because we only see the girls from behind, I get the slightly voyeuristic feeling that I have accidentally walked in on a private moment.

Inside the Sketchbook of Pat Perry

I've been following Pat Perry's work since 2010, when I posted a time-lapse video of him creating a beautiful layered painting over the course of a few weeks (you can watch it here).

Today I want to focus your attention on his sketchbooks. They are so intricate and detailed, it's really incredible how much goes into each spread. His drawings are so much more than just sketches of what may be in front of him, they are scenes that will capture your attention and seem to be alive, almost breathing with life. You can see plenty more over on his website: patperry.net
