Layers of Doodles

The sketchbook of Stuart Adams is a wild ride. He draws in layers, which makes each page take a while to soak in while my eyes constantly find new visual details hidden underneath the doodled characters. Some of his backgrounds are unexpected textures, photographs, or a chaotic melange of colors which gives a certain depth to otherwise silly-looking doodles. My favorite thing Adams does is use white space to draw characters within the background, and then doodle more characters over those in black. The end product is crowded, messy, and full of spontaneous spirit. I see where Adams was coming from when he said, “The best way to describe my artwork is that it is like taking a mystery tour bus where Disney Land fuses into a Heironymous Bosch painting.”

Simple Lines with Such Great Meaning

Art that sticks to the basics is often the most compelling. When I found these doodles by an illustration student named Laurel, I lost track of time and scrolled through months and months of drawings before I realized how deep I had gone. Many of her drawings are childlike, but each rough line was drawn with purpose. The best for me are her series of giant girls wandering the world, sitting on waterfalls and poking your house.

Leave a Little Mystery

I found a peculiar art blog with almost no details on the doodler responsible for it. O4YA draws characters that seem like personified emotions. Sometimes childlike and other times creepy (or occasionally both), almost every illustration seems like a prompt for a story. The details in the drawings are specific enough to spark curiosity, but not enough to answer my questions.

Doodles Save This News Anchor's Live Weather Forecast

A weather reporter from ABC News 4 was attempting to deliver his daily update on live TV when the computer that animates the forecast froze up. After a few minutes of small talk, the anchor team quickly doodled up a few weather icons and then throw them up onto the green screen behind him. It's a great example of improvising on live TV.

Drawings Right in the Middle of Something

What I like about Sarina Nihei's doodles is the I feeling that all these people are frozen in the middle of some action. I have no idea what's going on, but it looks interesting and each drawing leaves me kinda craving to see what happened before or what will happen next. This all makes a lot of sense when you find out that Nihei is also an animator, an explanation for why her doodles look like a single frame plucked from a storyboard. Maybe the lack of context is what makes these odd little moments a lot more fun.

Tumblr of the Week:
Ahmet Özcan Illustrations

I came across the drawings of Ahmet Özcan after he mailed in one of our Doodle Addict postcards and then again when he submitted an illustration for our latest coloring book. My favorite posts are the photos of his awesome white-on-black doodles over his sketchbook. The characters in his drawings are creature feature material, often looking as if they are emerging out of the whiteness to come after you. There's something so interesting about the way he leaves out the body of the monster, leaving much of it up to your imagination to color in. Equal parts playful and creepy, fans of monsters will love his doodles! See more of his images »
