Cyber Doodle Monday

This week we published two new books for you to enjoy. Each one filled to the brim with art from our community of doodlers, scribblers, artists and illustrators.

We are shipping them out today for bargain prices. No kidding, it will be the best gift you give out this year. Happy holidays and cheers to all of the participating artists from Coloring Book, Volume 3 and our new mini coloring book: The Quintessential, Quirky, Compendium of Cats.

An Incredible Book of Drawn Vintage Cars by Lapin

We've featured French artist Lapin many times here on DA. Every time I look at his work it inspires me to drop everything and sketch. You too will fall in love with the composition of his lines and the mass collection of sketchbooks he's filled from cover to cover (look for yourself).

So it's with great joy that I learned today that he plans on publishing a book (Oldies but Goldies) with his incredible collection of drawn vintage cars found on the streets. I'll say it again, these are not drawings he's making back in his studio with photo references. He literally stumbles across a car and can't imagine passing it without respecting its history, so he sits down right then and there and draws it.

In his own words: "I project the dim light of those years in my book through my drawings and try to tell you the beauty behind the wrinkles, the experiences behind the broken parts and memories behind their dust so that they will be immortal."

He's running a campaign to raise funds to print this fantastic book. Follow the link and support this project (by doing so you'll also secure yourself a copy).

Walrus: A Handbook of Brandon Graham's Visual World

Although the internet is filled with a constant stream of inspiration, I often feel the need for that tactile feel of something that I can hold. And although I often come in contact with amazing people and mind blowing artwork out in the "real world", it is always the stuff that is rough that is the most interesting to me.

Which is why I couldn't help myself when I held Walrus, a book containing a collection of drawings and sketchbook comics by Brandon Graham. I examined each panel of the book with great detail looking at the intricacies of the expressions of his characters, while on the same page, you are offered a glimpse into Graham's creative process (inspirations, frustrations and so on). Turn the next page and you are presented with a peek into his everyday life via comical drawn panels. But beyond all of that, this book was just plain fun to look at.

As a fun aside: there is a nod to Gen13 in one of the pages of the book, which will be a nice surprise to diehard fans of the 90's comic book (like me).

Drawn Tattoos

The lovely and incredibly talented Wendy MacNaughton has been illustrating tattoos (and the stories behind them) for the tumblr blog; Pen & Ink, and now (deservedly so) she is turning it into a book.

Wendy and her Pen & Ink collaborator Isaac Fitzgerald are in the final stretch of putting it all together, but not before reaching out to me with a last-minute call for submissions. Do you have a tattoo with a compelling story behind it? If so, they want it, and they want it now. Take a pic of your tattoo, write a few words with its story and send it to: penandinkproject {at} gmail {dot } com

Look-N-Find

Long-time friend of DA, Mr. Jess Smart Smiley is making a children's book he's quite passionate about. It's not often that I post about Kickstarter type projects, but I couldn't help falling in love with his cute monsters and playful scenes. The book is titled, Rumpus on the Run, and is Kickstarter's first "look-n-find" book.

Lucky for us, Jess passed along some of his sketches from over the years. Take a look below and make sure to check out his Kickstarter page, the rewards especially, he's even offering to draw some of you right into the book ;)

Coloring Book, Vol. 2

Some of my favorite moments working on Doodlers Anonymous is when we extend ourselves beyond the internet to produce something unique and tangible and born from the art of our community.

This week we published our second coloring book. I am thrilled and I'm pretty sure you will be too. I promise that you've never seen a coloring book quite like it. With every page turn you'll discover another style of drawing by a different artist. 60 of them to be exact.

It's now for sale at doodlersanonymous.com/coloringbook (get yourself or your best friend a copy). It will soon appear at a few boutique shops around the globe too. If you'd like to carry it in your shop or know somewhere that should, drop us a line.

Much love and respect to our stellar community of artists and aficionados. It's been a pleasure hosting all of you.

I Love Hate Mail

You'd normally be offended if someone insulted you, and you'd probably be doubly offended if you'd had to pay for the privilege. But if Mr Bingo insults you, you're one of the lucky ones. Every time Mr Bingo advertises new slots for his Hate Mail project they sell out in a few minutes. I've tried to get myself some Hate Mail 3 or 4 times now with no joy.

The idea is simple. You pay Mr Bingo a tiny sum (I can't remember how much off hand) and he sends you an original… hand-drawn… one of a kind… insult!

Which means the purchaser gets a signed original drawing, the postman gets a laugh and a story to tell his mates, and the whole world is a little happier. It definitely makes me a little happier to see new Hate Mail examples pop up around the internet.

And if you're unlucky in your quest for Hate, like me, you are now IN luck. Because some of Mr Bingo's favourite Hate Mail has been collected in his new book which is imaginatively titled, Hate Mail. The book will be available October 11th, and if you follow Mr Bingo on twitter he's been announcing a bunch of (UK) dates where he will be doing book signings and things like that.
