One More Time, for the Cheap Seats
in the Back

Every weekend Joe List peppers his copy of the Guardian newspaper with cute, slimy, dorky creatures. He gives a face to every faceless object, and ensures that cranky dinosaurs in tiny bowler hats are given their front-page glory! With online news becoming the norm now, he might not have much longer to get these creatures down on actual newsprint, so we best make the most of it while we can, right?

Confession. We've actually mentioned Joe before. OKAT featured The Annotated Weekender on DA in 2009 (yep, that long ago...) but since you probably don't have the spare-time or the breathing apparatus to dive that deep into our archives, here it is again. There's over FOUR YEARS of new content for you to catch up on and giggle at.

Here are a few of my favourites. This was not an easy cull to make!

Robot Fetish

I have an unhealthy infatuation with all things robot. I use an Android phone. My favorite movie is Terminator 2. I cheered as Watson destroyed the inadequate humans at Jeopardy. And I have recurring dreams of the robot apocalypse. But it seems snyart has taken her obsession for our robot overlords to a different level. She has undertaken a journey to doodle 365 robots over the course of a year marking February 2012 as the anniversary. Not surprisingly, 2012 is also the year the Mayans predicted our downfall. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Prepare to be assimilated below.

Choo-Choo!

Happy day! The wonderful Scribble Project by OPPY is back in business and gearing up for a big team scribble: a super long train of carriages doodled by you. This is one of the most clever collaboration projects around and with last year's successful totem pole created with over 100 submissions (as featured in Anorak Magazine), we have no doubt this train will be chugging along in no time. Don't hesitate, click here to participate and download the template, submissions close February 16th 2010 February 26th, 2010 (deadline has been extended).

Once collated and printed, the coloring zine will be available for purchase at the start of March, with all profits donated to UNICEF. Big ups to OPPY for reminding us all to step away from the computer screen and do something fun. Love, love, love this.

Digital Doodles

I came across these lovely digital doodles the other day, by Karla Sharin. I really like the pop culture/Indie music references and the soft hand that makes me wonder, are these really digital? And get this, she's only 17! Check out some more of her compu-sketches at: http://digitaldrawings.tumblr.com/

Learn Something Every Day

Did you know that the space between your eyebrows is called the glabella? Or that kissing for one minute can burn 26 calories? Yeah, me either. But now, thanks to Learn Something Every Day (a self initiated daily project by UK based design studio Young), we can learn all kinds of random and pointless facts in doodle-form.

Say Draw Hello

Kristen sends an email to tell me about The Hello Project, an online social collaboration where anyone can submit a post-it note saying hi, shalom, hola, howdy, etc. It's simple to participate, just write/sketch/doodle an introduction onto your favorite colored 3x3 post-it, scan, and submit via email. It's fun, easy as pie and everyone is doing it.

Letter Playground

I've discovered a new favorite pastime: browsing the wonderful pages of letterPLAYGROUND. The site comes to us courtesy of the talented and generous Nate Williams. Nate is not only one of my favorite artists, he's also the founder of Illustration Mundo, the highly successful illustration community. And now he has given birth to a site full of letter inspiration.

Hand-drawn, digital, photography, collage, you name it and you'll find it. A place to play with letter forms that are represented a million different ways. If you like letters the way I like letters, then you better clear your schedule, you'll need the rest of the day.
