Coloring Book Interview Series, #1: Kelsey Wroten

Kelsey Wroten is an art student and visual storyteller that we published through our open call for submissions and featured in our Coloring Book, Volume 3. Having seen none of her work outside the coloring book page before I looked her up, I was pleasantly surprised to find that Kelsey specializes in comics! I had to reach out to her for an interview so I could share her uncensored world of snappy dialogue and surreal situations with you.

Doodles + Transparency Sheets = MAGIC

Aug(De)Mented Reality is a fresh video that's recently been getting passed along the internet, and for hella good reasons. Hombre_McSteez combines traditional cell animation with still photography from his iPhone into one of the most captivating videos I've seen lately. It's always super cool to see 2D drawings roaming the 3D world, but seeing the real objects and landscapes responding to being played around with is what really makes this video come alive. We couldn't resist sharing something this perfectly executed.

Follow @Hombre_McSteez on Instagram to see more animations weekly!

Tumblr of the Week: Snippets

This is exactly the kind of thing I regret not doing for every trip I've been on. When I'm visiting other countries, everything seems like it's unforgettable, and that I'll remember it years to come. But beyond the most "noteworthy" attractions there are countless sights and moments that were so subtle, that after a few years most have slipped my mind like sand through my fingers.

Emma Sylvie's illustrated travel log puts so much emphasis on the small details that you wouldn't really know about if you didn't go there yourself, I almost feel as if I'm experiencing it with her. What stands out for me beyond the touristy things is the moments of people-watching. The best part is the way her drawings are narrated, so I can know what she felt in that moment and see the world exactly through her point of view.

If you're addicted to tumbling as well as doodling, follow Doodlers Anonymous on Tumblr for even more daily inspiration. You might even see yourself on there!

Featured Artist #21: Greg Kletsel

Greg Kletsel is a drawing machine. In all seriousness, I believe he must be built of metal and moving parts with at least one robotic arm and an infinite supply of ink. That's the only thing that could explain the amount of work he outputs.

I met Greg a thousand years ago when he interviewed at the studio I worked at. The position didn't play out, but I liked his drawing skills and asked if he'd draw up an idea I had for a t-shirt. That's how Tools of the Trade was born (it's still one of my favorite tees).

Today, Greg is a full-time illustrator and designer based in Brooklyn, New York who's rocking it on the illustration scene. Cranking out zines, comics, posters, and all while filling up sketchbook pages by the minute. I have tons of respect for Greg and so it made perfect sense to feature his work in an exclusive drawn interview. He of course did not take the task lightly and simply blew our minds away with his drawn responses to each question. Check out the detail, line work and thought behind each drawing. Wow! Featured: John Malta

The world of John Malta is in another realm. His shaky uneven lettering, his colorful yet dark and eerie illustrations, his fascination with punk shows and pet lizards - they all make for something that's weird and wonderful at the same time.

To this day, John's cat doodle (I'm still not quite sure if it's really a cat but I love him anyway), which you can find inside our DA coloring book, remains as one of my favorites.

For his feature, John answered a few questions for us in doodle form. His answers, as you will see, are full of character, full of texture, full of awesome. He also sent over some photos from inside his studio in NYC, where he is living now.

Moldy Magic. That's how he refers to his work. And really, I couldn't have come up with a better pairing of words to describe John Malta and his sultry craft. It's bound to grow on you, if it hasn't already.

Featured: Clemens Behr

I secretly refer to him as "Clemens The Great." It's true. Because his work is truly that good.

I can't remember when I discovered Cle's work. It must have been a year or two ago. But I do remember my reaction when I first saw the chaotic juxtaposition of basic geometric shapes, sharp angles and bold lines. It's the same reaction I get every time, even after frequent visits to his site. My jaw drops to the ground, my eyes get watery from not wanting to look away or blink for an instant.

We at DA are nothing short of ecstatic to have this exclusive "Doodle Interview" with Clemens Behr. He has also shared with us some of his recent works and an inside peak inside his very colorful studio brimming with tapes and boxes.

Enjoy the interview and the extra goodies. And here's a tip I've learned: It's okay to blink.

Featured: Morgan Blair

I love Morgan Blair. Pass it on.

Everything from her smudgy pencil marks to her hissing tiger drawings and animated gifs that are hurtful to the eyes (I bet she does it on purpose just to mess with you) - her work is the kind of work that lingers in your brain, forever and ever, and it's a problem.

A graduate of Rhode Island School of Design, she is living and working in Brooklyn, NY and her interests include trees, legos and making art forever.

For her feature, we wanted to take full advantage of her ridiculous doodling skills - the kind of ridiculous that makes you envious. We asked her a few questions and she answered using her habitual tools - paper, pencil, pen and color.

And that's not all, gang. Morgan took a break from her road trips and adventures to also share with us highlights of some of her more recent work and works-in-progress.

Take a look around, fall in love with Morgan and her scratch 'n' sniff art. If the scent doesn't do you in, the art will.
