No Need for a Clean-Up

One can tell that when Z Otavio opens up his sketchbook, he holds nothing back. And that is exactly how a sketchbook should be used. His pages are layer upon layer of dirty, rough scratches, scribbles, tearings - you name it. I say we all open up our sketchbooks today and let ourselves go.

Lines and Halftones

She had me sold just by looking at her menu. Cut out letters and patterns - I'm in! And then I dug a little deeper and I was right. Her work is light and fun, with a mix of collage, images, and hand drawings in different inks. Indulge yourself in Dudu's vast collection of playful work.

Next Time No Junk

Last week, Okat and I met to catch up and discuss our plans for DA. And in true DA form, we drew together inside one of his sketchbooks. I know, how appropriate. Our meet-up consisted of a couple of micron pens, some ridiculously cheap markers and to top it all off, cold beer and laughter. It was a good day, and what do we have to show for it? This all over the place, colorful, I-Don't-Get-It collaborative doodle.

Draw Here. Draw There.

It's a new year and it's time to make brand new, amazing, even-better-than-last-year's drawings.

If you're not familiar with "The Sketchbook Project," you are now. (Take a look, we mentioned it here.) Just a quick recap in case you're not familiar: The nice people at Art House Co-op sends a sketchbook out to anyone who wants to be a part of this project (for a minimal fee). You draw all over it. You send it back to them when it's filled and then your sketchbook is exhibited at galleries as it makes its way across the country on a tour.

Elizabeth Caldwell has started her 2011 sketchbook and it's on its way to greatness. She's a stay-at-home mom and a freelance Designer and Illustrator. Take a peak inside her first few pages - lots and lots of playful type. Tell me, what's not to like?

Somewhere in the City

I am surrounded by some extremely talented people and I'm a lucky girl for it. Alvaro Naddeo is an Art Director originally from So Paulo, Brazil and now lives in New York. Some random facts about him: He is extremely hard working and punctual, he takes the 6 train every day, and his sketchbooks are wonderful - wonderfully simple. He captures his daily experiences in the city with only black ink - buildings, food, receipts - and there you have it.

Sex, Comedy and Animals

I just got inspired by looking at my amazing friends' blog (If you're hungry for inspiration on this lazy sunday, check out Wunderkabinett). Thanks to their blog, I discovered the beautiful art of Kelsey Brookes and am now one of his biggest fans.

Kelsey is a former biochemist who lives by the beach in San Diego. Lucky man. And he attributes his raw art style to an education system that "refuses to teach scientists to draw."

If you like loud, colorful, abstract, and just plain jaw-dropping good art, you've come to the right place. Here it is. The ingenious talent that is Kelsey Brookes.

Time Moves Faster

I have to apologize for the lack of updates on my part. When they say that NY moves fast, I had no idea they actually meant it. Work has been keeping me extra busy and I have also decided to go back to school at night. My love for DA, however, still runs deep, and to prove it, I have decided to share the pages of my sketchbook. I carry it in my purse at all times and it is slowly falling apart. But I am especially fond of this sketchbook because I have always wanted a red one (it's the little things that count).

The pages inside are a mix of brainstorming session notes, random thoughts, ripped scraps of paper and color. It's a little bit messy. It's a little bit playful. And I like to think that it's a little bit like its maker.
