Craft Paper Dudes

Simply put, some people are natural born illustrators. I discovered the work of Mister Woody Woods on Instagram and was immediately attracted to his constant and consistent feed of bright and bold images.

There's plenty of his work I wanted to feature here, but I'd rather leave you to dig around his full collection and instead I'll focus your attention to his paper craft characters. They are made-up from the perfect combination of doodled marker-lines and bold colored paper, cut to shape the forms of beards, funny noses, swirly hair, and striking eyes. Enjoy.

I live to find random and happy projects like this one by Momoe Narazaki, a talented graphic designer and illustrator who recently launched a fun tumblr with close to one-hundred odd faces in funny and quirky animations. Never mind cat videos, just stare at these all day.

Giveaway: Nature Anatomy by Julia Rothman

If you don't know the work of Julia Rothman, you better get to it. I've been a fan of her work for as long as I can remember, from her lovely hand-drawn patterns to her sketchbook pages of intricate drawn buildings. She's also authored and illustrated some of my favorite books, like Drawn In and Hello NY. And now she's released another book to rival all the others.

Nature Anatomy is 224 pages of hand-drawn goodness and features tons of drawings, diagrams, and dissections from the natural world. Julia takes us on a visual tour of trees, birds, insects, animals, wildflowers, ecosystems, and so much more.

You'll want this book and we've got one to giveaway. To be in the running, just leave a comment on this blog post with your single favorite thing to draw from nature. We'll pick a random winner from the hat. Comments close July 6th (Monday) at 11am Eastern. Good luck everyone... and for those of you that can't wait, you can get your hands on the book today on Amazon.

UPDATE: We have a winner! We randomly pulled a name from the hat and... congrats to Catharine Mi-Sook! Your copy of the book will be mailed out this week. Enjoy and thank you all for participating.

Serial Doodling

I began following Eric von Boxtel on Instagram a few months ago, when his layered and full-colored doodles popped up on my feed. They instantly caught my attention because there's probably nothing I like more than thick black doodled lines over a backdrop of color. It looks easy, it looks like a mish mash of a mess, like a kid who might have gotten away with a box of markers, but it's not at all the case.

These scribbles and shapes of color are intentional and come together so perfectly. I love looking at each spread, trying to find something new or to figure what he's drawn first on the page. If you want to be mesmerized for a full minute and forty-five seconds, watch this time-lapse video.

New Contributor: Emily Joynton

Great news DA readers. We have a new semi-regular contributor to the blog. A few months back I met Emily over some coffee and we immediately hit it off. She's a hard-working, freelance illustrator, that is enthusiastic about all things art. Emily is also aspiring to get more into editorial and short-story illustrations, you can follow her journey on her website and Instagram feed.

She's already shared some great posts with us, like the Illustrated Travel Journals of Chris Buchholz and the Art Direction and Adolescence of Alex Citrin.

I'm definitely looking forward to more of her features, now let's put our pens down for a moment and give her a warm welcome :)
